Christmas has many magical meanings of great importance and of hope for the human race. ‘Magical’ knowledge emerges from our imaginations, from our extraordinary ability to visualise and conjure up tangible and abstract, ephemeral and even invisible things – and thus to magically invent universal models, music, medicine, microchips and motors. If we lose our magic – our race will decline and die away.

But, we survived the Mayan's 2012 doomsday and we will probably live to enjoy perhaps millions more Christmases. Mayan THE END OF DAYS

In the beginning, once upon a time, Christmas was, and is, the Midwinter Solstice of the Northern Hemisphere – which means it is the shortest day and longest night, on the 20^th-21^st December, with a Full Moon on the 28^th December; after which days lengthen - heralding the eventual coming and growth of spring – the renewal of life and its perpetual continuation.

In the Southern Hemisphere the shortest day is in June. Europeans and Asians took the northern festival dates south of the equator and around the world. As the longest, coldest night passed, a tribe could assess if their food would last – and feast on stores that would otherwise spoil – the Christmas Feast.

The secrets, songs and sacred myths of Christmas are deep folk memories of real, evolutionary events, which we have woven into archetypal stories to better remember and understand them. It is not a recent creation of Disney, Hollywood and Bing Crosby.

The great festival of good tidings comes from our memories of glittering ice, snow, cold, clear skies and survival – probably from as far back as the ice-ages – which cover most of the Earth about every nine-thousand years, scour it clean and then recede back to the Poles – and let us warm up, and maybe further evolve, for a while. Our shared human unconscious and genes are now thought to date back more than five-million years – or five-hundred waxing and waning ice-ages through which we have survived, thrived and evolved. Our long-body, back to Adam and Eve, carries the marks of those millennia.

Every new baby is born with all the genetic records generated through the Ice-Ages, from the beginning of Time and intuitively has knowledge of our species, the Earth and the Universe – from which it comes. One gram of the baby’s DNA can digitally record all the E-information of all our global activities for an entire year – Harvard Medical School encoded a “DNA” book to prove it, earlier this year. Isn’t that magical? And it illustrates how the baby can effortlessly be carrying the entire history of the whole human race in its very essence.  DNA STORES YOUR LIFE

It is little wonder that the Jews prophesised the Messiah as a newborn – who would miraculously save the world. All babies are potential Saviours and perhaps wise people can spot the exceptional new arrivals. And thus the Old Testament mythological prophesy was fulfilled when Jesus (Joshua, Yahshua, God-Saves) was born, in a stable, in Bethlehem, two-thousand-and-twelve years ago, under a clear, cold sky, marked by a new brilliant star. The Gospel “Christ” is Greek for “Anointed One” from “chrism” or oil – the blessed ceremonial oil of Jewish Temples. And, Yes, it does snow in Israel, so the Christmas crib scenes are not impossible depictions. It was indeed a miracle of life and creation; which magically triggered the imaginations of the hundreds of millions of people who now are Christians. Christ was and is one of the world’s “Great Souls”.  At Christmas, we celebrate his miraculous birth and wondrous potential.  Hollywood did not invent Him.

Nor did Hollywood invent Santa Clause, Saint Nicholas, Father Christmas and his distinctive RED costume and white beard. This bringer of gifts; this generous and magical spirit; this flying spirit with magic reindeer; who enters all homes via the chimney – dates back at least to 255AD in Patra, now in Turkey, being an aristocrat or a Bishop, wearing a red cloak and giving presents; and, particularly in Norse Mythology, can be re-discovered as an archetypal figure back in the mists of pre-history.

The explanation that I most like is that Northern families in the forests of the Tundra used to survive winter by digging six-foot (2 metre) pits in which they erected Yurts (round tents of skins and wadded wool). The pits provided warmth and secure windproof earthen walls to ward off wolves and bears. Each Yurt was entered through a roof-hole that let out the smoke, thus it was a chimney, with a ladder down to the floor. Here the family would live out the freezing months. The further north they were, the longer and darker the nights.

But, not everyone was immobilised by the snow and ice.

Shamans or Medicine Men, Wizards, Warlocks or Magicians visited the Yurts, relying on hospitality for shelter. These wise wanderers brought artefacts, gossip, news and sagas. They told Tales for their suppers. They entered the Yurts down the chimneys. For magic – they brought narcotic and hallucinogen brews that induced marvellous dreams. One brew was made from particular mushrooms (do NOT try this at home) with white dotted red tops – which are very poisonous to people, but the Shamans knew that reindeer sought out the mushrooms, ate them, got very high and later pissed out the drug. The reindeer’s piss was collected (most tribes had herds of reindeer) processed and drunk by the people – who hallucinated that they were flying. It fired imagination and helped to pass many an otherwise uneventful, dreary evening without television.  And gave rise to all the familiar Christmas stories of Santa flying through the snowy, dark skies on a present laden sleigh, pulled by reindeer.

The world is never short of psychopaths who kill children. Two thousand years ago, at the first Christmas, King Herod slaughtered all the Bethlehem infants up to two years old; just in case one of them might grow to challenge him. Since then, wars have slaughtered millions of blameless young people and recently have forced Congo children to pick up guns and join murderous bands. Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of New York, speaking of the 27 people killed this week by automatic gun fire at the Sandy Hook junior school in Newtown, stressed that the US is the only developed country that allows citizens to carry arms. He wants President Obama and US Senators to ban rapid-fire automatic weapons.

The NRA mistakenly believes that being armed protects ordinary people; the reverse is true. University of Philadelphia statistics show that armed citizens are 4.5 times (450%) more likely to be shot than unarmed folk. Instead of banning guns, the NRA wants government to identify mentally unstable people (how?) – before they get a gun and kill others – and …what? Incarcerate them “just in case”? Eliminate them from the gene pool? Perhaps shoot them? The NRA’s second argument to allow all red-bloodied real Americans to continue to tote guns capable of firing 19 rounds in 3 seconds …is to “arm the schoolteachers and children so they can protect themselves”.  Spot the Looney indeed.

The cap on loan interest and charges should be 5% because:

1) Money is too expensive; with annual rates from 3% to 36% for bank and credit-card loans and without limit for payday loans, now typically charged at 1,500% to 4,500% per annum. The money economy is stuffed full of jobs that should be automated - employing approximately 4% of the workforce (this is more jobs than in the health services). Charging 5% maximum, with Base Rates for banks at 0.5%, gives the lenders 90% profit; which is bigger than for almost any other business.

2) Bad debts ruin good economies; the present rates are set by banking cartels and pitched at the absolute maximum that markets will tolerate. Inevitably millions of people default, which creates another entire industry of debt-recovery. Hundreds of thousands are dragged through Courts, bankrupted, made homeless and suffer family breakdown. Bad debts from unaffordable loans are a huge attack on stable economies. 

3) Usury is a sin; all major religions ban high interest rates, whose destructive power has been formally recognised for more than 5,000 years. Low life money lenders are not a new problem. If you have no religion, common humanity and personal ethics should make you revolt against this social evil. Who among you will admit to making such loans or admiring those who do. Take a moral stance.

4) High rates accelerate unearned-income inflation; most inflation of prices is driven directly by the cost of money. The higher the rates, the faster inflation rages. This is due to the fact that almost all consumer prices are the top layers of about 15 stages of production - and stages of some services. Each stage is financed seperately as goods proceed from mines, farms and raw materials, to manufacturing, to layers of distribution, to shops and finally to customers. This layer cake of costs typically conceals heavy finance costs in the final price. High interest dramatically increases prices. Low interest capped at 5% will reduce most prices, world-wide, by about 25%.

5) High rates dissuade banks from lending to small businesses; why lend to SMEs at 7.5% when banks can force the business owners to apply via credit cards at 36%. Small businesses, globally, employ 60% of the workforce and are the bones and engine rooms of all economies. A 5% cap will make loans and capital available to them. 

6) Loan-sharks create human misery; the facile and glib spokepersons for this vile "industry" trot out erroneous statistics to prove how happy their customers are. The grim reality is that borrowers are forced by hunger and survival into borrowing a few hundred dollars - and are thereafter entrapped. An English "customer" borrowed £750 and repaid £90,000 over 15 years of being (legally) bullied every week before a court discovered the loan-shark was not licensed by The Bank of England - and broke the poor man's chains. Is that the sort of society you want.

7) Loan-sharking was against the law until 1980. Both in the UK and USA it was illegal to charge more than 30% - which was itself an evil charge. Lenders did go to prison in the days before The Free Markets.

ACTION - All countries should impose a 5% cap on interest and charges - effective immediately. Give the victims a break - before Christmas. Write to your elected representative now.

17TH JULY 2014 - The UK Government has used the public's loathing of child abusers to shoehorn in, literally overnight, a new 1984 Total Surveillance law - DRIP - which requires all telephone and internet providers to retain all records of all telecoms and internet use on all citizens, in perpetuity. And, of course, to give total access to government agencies. This contrasts with German Chancellor Angela Merkel's and EU demands that the US (and the UK) stop meta-data and personal e-spying on family, friends and foes alike. 

Conservative PM, David Cameron, insists that he and DRIP are keeping us all safe in beds - safe from Terrorists and Sex Abusers; and that "IF YOU HAVE NOTHING TO HIDE, then you have nothing to fear" - the assurance offered by all mad dictators and secret police. This coincides with a new inquiry into sex abuse by senior UK political figures - allegedly including top Tory figures - who among other unpleasant habits beat and sodomised little boys trapped in government "Care Homes", from about 1950 to date; probably all Friends of Jimmy Savile.

To demonstrate the urgent need for DRIP, UK police have, on the same day the snooping law was passed, arrested 660 UK pedophiles who have been accessing and swapping vile images of abused children. Only 39 of those arrested were previously on the Sex Offenders register. A police investigator for OPERATION NOTARISE said there are 50,000 Brits who use such illegal criminal pornography. An academic expert from UCL, on BBC Newsnight 16th July, claimed that 1 in 6 UK children are sexually abused; which is so unlikely that he ought to check his data and insane calculations. 

FUTURIST VIEW - So, what are the consequences? Government will know what all citizens are doing on-line and no records will be deleted. Any attempt to block surveillance and keep business confidential will be an immediate target for zealous snoopers. This will accelerate the growth of the unhackable (so far) INTERNET 2 called MESHNET and other wireless networks. It will also enable TAX COLLECTORS to gather cast iron evidence of tax and money frauds going back decades, which will cause a run on the world's 74 tax-havens. On-shoring will greatly accelerate from now - in 2014. For child-abusers, terrorists and tax-evaders there is nowhere safe to hide.

Who is for it? Allegedly the “security services” want all the extra data - to catch terrorists (one in two persons over the age of eight is a suicide bomber who should be incarcerated). The police want it to catch criminals and millions of paedophiles (one in every two adults is a heinous paedophile who ought to be castrated). Your neighbours want it to gossip about you. The tax authorities want it to catch dodgers. The “Government” want it to control you completely. Marketing departments of all businesses want it – to sell you stuff. Health authorities want it – to save your life. Insurance companies want it – to deny more claims.  Banks and loan-sharks want it to assess your credit. Computer and software tracking and storage makers want it – to make billions. Academics want it for analyses. National Car Parks want it – to charge you extra fees. Once the data is collected – all these agencies will get access to your personal data and will use it.

Who is against it? Everyone who recalls any harsh, cruel, mad and intrusive government, regime or business cartel or monopoly at any time in history fears it. Not all government officers are benign.  What is the Techno-reality? President George Bush Senior about 20 years ago said of the Internet “Forget Privacy – Privacy is Dead”.  This is technologically true. If any well resourced agency wants to read all your data, it can get it – now, today. BUT – such time consuming searches do need licenses and cost money – and presumably are not done lightly. Specific targeting is very, very different to reading and auto-scanning everyone’s letters, emails, Google searches, Tweets, blogs, websites, hard-drives, computers – and ultimately, brain-cells for signs of sedition. Such auto-surveillance will throw up thousands of “suspicious characters” who will then be targeted. All the data will be available to millions of government employees and others – who will snoop on their friends, colleagues, families and neighbours.

The technology battle lines are being more clearly drawn between devices that are Watching You and devices that are Hiding You. These are real and here today. They exist because this Cyberwar is upon us. Big Brother is already watching you – and wants to get ever closer and know ever more about you.

Personally, I will do what little I can to resist surveillance – but those open, innocent, saintly souls with nothing to hide will happily permit their Parish Council to install spy-cams in their bedrooms and lavatory-pans – for the public record.

In my role as a “Futurist” I see that governments and commercial agencies will be unstoppable in their lust for intrusive data about us all – and that as they gain more and more data the public will respond by (1) Feeding in rubbish – Rubbish In; Rubbish Out - to baffle the analyses software, and (2) The next generation will create alternative Internets that defy surveillance, which all Sinners will use – while the Saints will stick to the old Internet and will reveal all; before they are all executed by a mad dictator who distorts their data history.

Yesterday, at 3 o’clock in the cold dark winter’s morning, I clocked up seventy years, sixty-nine summers on this planet. From my birth in 1942, halfway through one of the most horrific wars in human history, evil primitive psychopathic madness almost triumphed; threatening to plunge mankind back into primeval darkness.  In the first three years of my life, sixty-million people were slaughtered including six-million Jews – two-thirds of civilian European Jews - and hundreds of thousands of other innocent ethnic minorities were almost wiped out. 

With truly great unselfish courage, sacrifice of life, pain, loss, intelligence and fortitude, the sane, good people of the world armed themselves and fought to the death to defeat the cruel and insane forces of darkness, manifest as the evil dictators of that era. We still need to be prepared to fight to the death at all times, to block the horrifying mad ambitions that can emerge in any of us; to try to exercise power, to take dominion and to enslave the world, by any means, at any price.

World War 1 and World War 11 just twenty years later, left my parents’ generation deeply traumatised – but they then managed to reduce wars, partly by forming The European Union; saving most of my generation from the horrors of military action (i.e. killing men, women and children).  As I grew up and we were able to thank Europe for peace and prosperity (that has lasted 67 years), I recall my father, who had sailed on the lethal ammunition convoys across the North Atlantic, then became an accountant, making his only prediction - that my generation’s war would be economic conflict.

I think we are in the middle of that economic war – between the crazed 0.5% who want to personally own the world and the sane 99.5% who want fairness, justice, calm, creative work and harmony. Mad people are madly determined and, like psychopathic leaders throughout history, are highly charismatic. We like their sense of certainty – however illogical their crazy vision is.

THE END REALLY, REALLY, REALLY IS NIGH

However – let’s move on to even more frightening prospects. Coinciding with me entering the last phase of my life, as is only to be expected and as is right and proper, I am sorry to tell you that if I have to end, the world is also about to end – and perhaps the whole universe will blink out of existence on my unwilling exit.

21^st December 2012 – Those wonderful accountants the mezzo-American Mayans, who left us to our fate in about  800AD, ended their stone baked calendar at the 21^st December this year. NASA and other scientific spoilsports argue that the world will continue after that date; but what do they know? Teams of hundreds of top boffins can’t even keep track of the Higgs Boson, never mind the Ancients’ complex omni-celestial astronomical calendar.

We pundits and futurists are not sure of the exact time – but does midnight seem appropriate for ending it all? Or perhaps dawn is more customary for executing the entire population of a planet – “The prisoner ate a hearty breakfast”.

HOW? Well, the first and most immediate trigger is that on 21^st December – the Winter Solstice, The Shortest Day (and last day?), Earth’s neighbouring planets line up on one side of us – and so exert a strong gravitational pull. This will crack open the Earth – and we will all die.  Or, every 2,737 years, the Earth wobbles nearer to or away from the Sun (take your choice) which triggers terrible calamities. Or, every 9,000 years or so, another wobble (precession) triggers an Ice Age, which mops up the oceans, leaves us high and dry and freezes us all to death. Or, every 62 million years or so, our insignificant little Solar and Planetary system, racing round the Milky Way at 514,000 miles an hour, dips and rises out of the galactic equatorial shadow that protects us from deadly cosmic rays – which then zap the planet causing mass-extinctions. And if none of those cycles or Acts of God get us – eventually the Sun will expand massively into a Red Giant, and burn us all to death. Unless – the human race finds a way to keep me alive forever, to give me immortality, in which case I will ward off all these threats.

Mrs Trellis of North Wales emails from her tax-haven in Douglas on the Isle-of-Man* "I worked hard for my money in Bangor, North Wales, and have arranged things to not pay any UK taxes. Well she has a point. Where is the vision  for British industry and commerce - as government fiddles while London burns? This world beating freight transport infrastructure project will create 60,000 UK industrial and commercial jobs and create a major global export business - and help to save the planet. A senior UK civil servant, resistIng pressure to open the envelope and look at the project, finally blurted out in protest - "But it is NEW Mr. Hodson - It's NEW!"

She also had a point - as The Ministry of Transport has an official, confidential, internal veto to stop any new infrastructure (by denying them planning permission). However - IF this project is given the go ahead, and modest amounts of seed-funding, it will create a new global industry and transform the global economy. FOODTUBES™ – Goods In & Waste Out – Low Cost, Low Pollution Transport.

Cargos can be packed into inexpensive, lightweight cargo-capsules, approx. 1 metre x 2 metres (about the size of a large man) or 1.57 cu metres, each carrying up to 2 tonnes of freight, propelled through underground, undersea and over-ground pipelines by electricity.  Wire “Cages” of about this size are loaded into supermarket vehicles, carrying goods between their warehouses and retail shops.

The Capsules will be precisely controlled by software – to travel through numerous interlinked, open-architecture Foodtubes Circuits, each of about 100 km; eventually forming The Transport Internet ™. 

In cities, dense-urban & urban areas, Foodtubes Circuits will be installed using No-Dig technology; reducing surface disruption. Pipeline-Circuits infrastructure will last for 50 to 100 years. It will create 60,000 UK jobs.

Today 92% of the fuel or energy used to transport freight is wasted on moving the vehicles. Only 8% is used to move the goods or cargos. Foodtubes uses only the 8%, ten to eleven times less energy.

Water, oil and gas are transported efficiently through pipelines. There are more than 300,000 km of large diameter pipelines in Europe and 500,000 km in the USA, including undersea pipelines; operating continuously, day and night, transporting huge, vital cargos, unseen and unheard by most citizens.

Many dry cargos could be transferred into Foodtubes, saving 90% of the equivalent diesel used today and reducing man-made CO₂ and other pollutants by 8% to 16%, annually saving billions of litres of diesel.

After water, food is the largest vital daily cargo. The food transport industry now utilises 25% to 30% of all freight vehicles. Foodtubes will transport goods from farm to supermarket, including recycling food & waste.

Carrying food and other suitable cargos FOODTUBES Circuits are capable of removing 50% of all the commercial transport vehicles from city streets, main roads and railways – and replacing a significant proportion of sea and air freight transport – at capital installation costs less than equivalent roadway repairs.

Letter to the BBC and The Guardian - on Budget Day, UK.

Jackie Ashley questioned the competence of our stalwart Revenue Officers, as compared to the international whizz-kids whose cunning tax-plans run rings round them.  “Firms must pay their fair share of tax – this is war” Guardian 3 Dec 2012. It is not through lack of intelligence or international reach that HMRC (once HMIT) fails to challenge the multi-nationals’ and posh people’s tax-haven companies and family trusts. As many tax dodgers could attest, HMIT/HMRC has some of the best UK brains – for example easily winning University Challenge on 8 Sept 2003. The whizz-kids simply play “Let’s Pretend” using ENRON bookkeeping, to make up tax-deductible costs, which is totally obvious, dumb, illegal false-accounting, not at all clever or complex. It is a long embedded political decision to not pursue the rich to pay their proper taxes.

5pm - The Chancellor's uninspired ideas delivered today would slowly starve any national economy to an ignoble death. What about collecting the $21 trillion hidden in Tax-Havens, those criminal refuges invented by Britain? Or are all the tax-dodgers Special Friends of Government?

How the EU and Nordic Countries can take the lead

Illicit financial flows, such as tax evasion, tax avoidance and lack of transparency in tax havens, are major concerns for all countries – developing and developed. Every year approximately 1000 billion dollars escape developing countries through illicit capital flight, with a large proportion ending up in tax havens. If these funds were taxed they would give developing countries an income 1.5 times greater than the total global development assistance. Similarly, a new report from the Tax Justice Network estimates that at least 21.000 billion dollars ($21 TRILLION) from wealthy individuals and corporations are hidden untaxed in tax havens. Needless to say, taxation of these funds would provide a significant income for both rich and poor countries.
