TTINT The Transport Internet & Foodtubes.

THE TRANSPORT INTERNET - FOODTUBES

Runner up in the 2008 St. Andrews Prize for the Environment.  -  Member of ISUFT.

FOODTUBES™ – Goods In & Waste Out – Low Cost , Low Pollution Transport.

Cargoes can be packed into inexpensive, lightweight cargo-capsules, approx. 1 metre x 2 metres (about the size of a large man) or 1.57 cu metres, each carrying up to 2 tonnes of freight, propelled through underground, undersea and over-ground pipelines by electricity.  Wire “Cages” of about this size are loaded into supermarket vehicles, carrying goods between their warehouses and retail shops.

The Capsules will be precisely controlled by software – to travel through numerous interlinked, open-architecture Foodtubes Circuits, each of about 100 km; eventually forming The Transport Internet ™.

In cities, dense-urban & urban areas, Foodtubes Circuits will be installed using No-Dig technology; reducing surface disruption. Pipeline-Circuits infrastructure will last for 50 to 100 years.

Foodtubes Commercial Models show 70% profits; charging less than equivalent lorries and trains. http://www.noelhodson.com/index_files/ftubesfinancials_28Sep07_v15.xls

Foodtubes has calculated that today 92% of the fuel or energy used to transport freight is wasted on moving the vehicles. Only 8% is used to move the goods or cargoes.

Water, oil and gas are transported efficiently through pipelines. There are more than 300,000 km of large diameter pipelines in Europe, including undersea pipelines; operating continuously, day and night, transporting huge vital cargos, unseen and unheard by most citizens.

Many cargoes could be transferred into Foodtubes, saving 90% of the diesel used today and reducing man-made CO2 and other pollutants by 8% to 16%, annually saving billions of litres of diesel.

After water, food is the largest vital daily cargo. The food transport industry now utilises 25% to 30% of all freight vehicles. Foodtubes will transport goods from farm to supermarket, including recycling food & waste.

Carrying food, and other suitable cargos. FOODTUBES Circuits are capable of removing 50% of all the commercial transport vehicles from city streets, main roads and railways – and replacing a significant proportion of sea and air freight transport.

If it wins this EC Grant Application (Apr 2011), Foodtubes plans a Demonstration Circuit for city transport managers to consider installing Foodtubes. http://www.noelhodson.com/Ftubes/12APR11-FOODTUBES-EC-e7M.pdf

RESURRECT OUR HIGH-STREETS - DISCUSSION PAPER

The current situation:

COVID-19: May 2020. The decline in people travelling to work and for family or leisure reasons is not yet calculated but common experience and business statistics indicate that passenger traffic this month is 80% less that before Covid-19 took hold.
The reports of traffic reducing to 1955 levels indicate a fall from 32 million licenced cars travelling 7,500 miles per annum to about to 4.5 million cars. Similar reductions have occurred on buses and trains. People are staying at home – and where possible are working at and from home. (WFH)

From our own statistics of workers who stay at home and use IT to communicate, prior to the Covid-19 Lockdown about 4 million worked in this way at home “on any one workday”. Approximately 12.5% of the workforce. Add to that the 80% of new WFH (work-from-home) workers, and it totals 28.5 million in voluntary or imposed lockdown. Only 4 to 5 million continue to commute daily.

Many business leaders have commented publicly on the positive benefits that they have seen, first-hand, as a result of their employees having to work from home during this lockdown. In particular, the well documented productivity gains which can be achieved from flexible working.

Employees have been able to effectively demonstrate to their managers that they can effectively manage the additional conflicts, which can arise when working at home, and deliver on time.

The current lockdown has also placed a further strain on the following two challenges which government, local authorities, town planners and property developers are trying to address:

1.     Provide more affordable homes inside and outside of cities.
2.     Restore High Street shopping and office work.

We see opportunities to collate and analyse the positives from the current lockdown and use them to rapidly rethink new ways to address these.

 The opportunity

As lockdown lifts, over the coming weeks, employers will have to meet the additional cost of implementing new government guidelines to minimise the spread of COVID 19 in the workplace. For example: It is likely we will see the implementation of one-way stairways, deployment of automatic hand sanitising dispensers and flexible working hours and staff rotation. These costs could be minimised with the implementation of better facilities for employees to live and work locally in a more flexible way or live closer to the office.

The average space occupied by a worker is 250 sq. feet. (23.2 sq. metres.) Multiply by 28.5 million WFH workers = 7,125,000,000 sq. feet or 7.1 Bn sq. ft  (662 million sq. metres). Average family homes plus a telework office are about 1,200 sq. ft; so, the recently emptied space is equivalent to 6 million home units. This space is already built – requiring conversion to create homes+offices.

Empty retail property could be converted into homes (with a home office) and into Telework hubs, which would have all the additional facilities that employees need to work efficiently away from their main offices. For example, they should have telephone integration and reception facilities, meeting rooms, workstations, state of the art video conferencing suits, postal and courier services mass printing, photocopying and IT support services. The work-space in these hubs could be rented by businesses on a per hour, per week or per year basis. Employees could live locally and work flexibly between their home, local high street hub, or any other high street hub and their main central office.

Some of the benefits for central government and local authorities:

1.     High streets would be rejuvenated, as a result of the additional homes and the telework hubs – enabling increases in spending locally.
2.  Increased local jobs (building and maintaining homes – plus eateries) and a greater sense of community.
3.   More homes could be provided rapidly in town centres, through the conversion, using less green belt land.
4.     Cleaner air in the towns and cities – promoting better health.
5.     Less commuting and congestion -

Our goal
The International Flexible Working Association aims to provide government and local authorities with well-researched proposals that will enable developers to convert local empty business units into family homes – with telework offices and telework hubs in High Streets. This will provide millions of new homes, revive High Streets day and night with families, support the businesses that remain – and, of equal importance, greatly reduce commuting and business-travel – and preserving the clean and quiet environment we are all now aware of, due to the Covid-19 Lockdown.

What we are seeking
The founder members of The International Flexible Working Association will apply for government grants to make a public study, to create partnerships with builders, architects, planners and finance houses, and to put the economic facts to mortgage companies for the provision of family finance to buy the converted homes. We have development companies standing by to deliver action-this-day.

Our credentials
The International Flexible Working Association’s founder members:

Richard Nissen invented the concept of the Virtual Office in the 1990s, set up a consultancy and has lectured on how to implement working from home and flexible working.  Advances in technology have  made this much easier.  However, the importance of the human dimension covering how employees feel and how to manage remote workers to promote productivity is paramount.

Noel Hodson – Telework Consultant. –  Noel is one of the pioneers who promoted working at home using advanced telecoms, since 1987. He wrote The Economics of Telework (Costs & Benefits) BT 1990, and Teleworking Explained 1992. Noel built and managed a profitable teleworked organisation of 38 home-offices and sixty people 1980-1990. He carried out many studies of telework-productivity and co-led a 40-experts EC project, The European Charter for Telework. He has conducted workshops across Europe and in America and written Telework Guidelines and Contracts for major employers including BT, WHO, TfL, and Eversheds.

Marcus Hickman specialises in consumer and employee research, analysis and strategy. Prior to founding Davies Hickman Partners in 2007 Marcus was MD of The Henley Centre (now Kantar Futures), one of the UK's leading strategic consultancies, and part of WPP. He has completed many research and consultancy projects about the intersection of technology with home, flexible and mobile working including the use of UC, UCAAS, mobile apps and cloud technologies.

Ayes Amewudah - IT Partner at Rathbone Results - Business Consultancy. Has successfully developed and implemented strategies which have turned around the fortunes of Corporates and large SME businesses in the technology and communications sector. Previously General Manager for BT, he developed and launched their first portfolio of products and services to enable businesses to successfully base their employees at home on a full or part-time basis.

Data used to compile this initial discussion document:
#Pre-Covid: ONS : Of the 32.6 million in employment, around 1.7 million people reported working mainly from home, with around 4.0 million working from home in the week prior to being interviewed for the survey.

#UK road travel falls to 1955 levels as Covid-19 lockdown takes hold

#About 24,000 commercial properties in London that could be turned into temporary housing or workspaces are lying empty, a report has found.
#Workers eye a permanent flight from the office

Appendix – For further qualification and or quantification as part of the study

Obvious benefits of lock down

CLEAN AIR – Bringing major health savings.
QUIET STREETS – Bringing major health savings
FEW if any ROAD ACCIDENTS – Bringing major health benefits.
REWILDING – Eco-benefits are widely reported.
PRODUCTIVITY – All sensible studies from 1992 to date show 10% to 50% increases.
BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE –  50% want to continue WFH.
MASSIVE SAVINGS OF FUEL AND VEHICLE IMPORTS.
NEW HOMES – About 3 million new-homes if 50% remain WFH.
VIGOROUS HIGH STREET ECONOMIES – Due to family residents.
LOW COMMUTING – Most work at home.

How to keep the benefits

CONVERT THE EMPTY SPACE This work will employ millions of UK residents.
CHANGE BUSINESS RATES TO DOMESTIC RATES. Business rate are failing fast.
MORTGAGES FOR THE NEW UNITS. Occupied by productive workers.
TREAT THE CONVERTED AREAS AS TELEVILLGES. Pleasant family areas.
INVITE TOP ARCHITECTS & DEVELOPERS. E.g. Docklands developments.
RESTORE BANK BRANCHES and POST OFFICES – Village scale
LATEST BROADBAND – Empower and fund BT. Ensure global reach.
EDUCATE ALL THE WORKERS IN I.T. Empower the Open University.

CONCLUSION:
The benefits of clean-air and quiet-streets will be maintained. High Streets will be useful day and night, seven days a week. The blight of deserted town and city centres after 6pm and massive commuting crowds, will vanish. The new WFH residents will create and support local facilities and local commerce.

UPDATE 12th June 2020 IS IT TOO LATE?

COVID-19 USA Banking collapse predicted by The Atlantic magazine:

Tony – Banking crash – as analysed in The Atlantic. I’m mindful that you early predicted Covid-19 – so, I read the whole CLO article. Oooo’er – dangerous stuff.

“Some members of Congress will question whether the Federal Reserve has the authority to buy risky investments to prop up the financial sector, as it did in 2008. (Dodd-Frank limited the Fed’s ability to target specific companies, and precluded loans to failing or insolvent institutions.) Government officials will hold frantic meetings, but to no avail. The faltering bank will fail, with others lined up behind it.
And then, sometime in the next year, we will all stare into the financial abyss. At that point, we will be well beyond the scope of the previous recession, and we will have either exhausted the remedies that spared the system last time or found that they won’t work this time around. What then?”
Bank liquidity is so complicated, I can’t take a view. It needs a big team of very skilled insiders to do the bookkeeping.

But, some major factors (1) I think ultimately it is a political decision to prop up the system – by printing money. As Obama did in 2009. Or – to crash the system. Where does Trump stand on that conundrum? (2) Big USA multinationals hold trillions legally offshore – taxable if/when repatriated  (3) Illegal cash offshore (tax unpaid)  is estimated to be circa $40 trillion +. NB – The article cites $billions of CLO debts owed by banks to Cayman companies – these are actually US assets if the Gov, chooses to claim them. It is this massive offshore river of cash seeking safe investment that has brought global interest rates to near negative levels.

(4) An odd effect of Covid-19 is that consumers have stopped spending – paid off their loans – and have bank savings e.g. The average saved from non-commuting is about $10K per annum. Car sales have frozen – and so have new car-lease borrowings. Bad for GM & Big-Oil; Good for households. Households have been sustained by soft-loans – furloughed salaries etc. - as here in the UK. For now, households are cash well-off. Money has moved from businesses to citizens – but it is still in the system. Like a blood transfusion it might be made to flow again. I think Covid-19 is a short term paralyses. “Old” business models will fail – new ones are springing up rapidly. The Internet users will not wait. These newly rich consumers might be persuaded to spend/invest rapidly. Or, its back to the 1930s.

In short – I guess Wall Street will only collapse if the US Gov wants it to.

An added threat to the conservative Brits as Covid-19 lifts – Is Brexit. All analysts globally, except UK True Brexit Believers, forecast 15% Sterling devaluation and 8% loss of GDP (7 million lost jobs). That could freeze the UK for decades. My brokers are looking ahead to try to pick out the Brexit-Bonanza shares; which UK industries and companies will boom after 31st December 2020 after a No-Deal. My old colleagues are proposing RESURRECT THE HIGH STREETS as a simple, rapid boost for the UK economy. But will Local Authorities see sense – or gum up the planning – commercial to homes – in a failed attempt to gouge out Business Rates? History says they will gum it up.

You were right to forecast Covid-19. I hope you are wrong about another bank meltdown.

Interesting stuff – Thanks

Noel

ARCTIC TEMPERATURE HITS 38C - 100F - PANDEMIC & PANIC

MOVE TO HIGHER GROUND!

JUNE 2020  Capital Weather Gang

Hottest Arctic temperature record probably set with 100-degree reading in Siberia - Washington Post

Record-shattering reading continues Siberia’s hot streak, foreshadows more heat elsewhere

MARCH 2020

89 scientists from 50 prestigious organisations analysed 26 ice surveys. They conclude that "Ice caps melting six times faster than in 1990's."  IPCC March 2020.

This gripping novel tracks Polar Meltdown, which causes Sea-Level-Rise, and the resulting Glacier-Flu, which is a global pandemic of the same type as evolved from H1N1 as Covid-19 or Coronavirus. The novel is far more dramatic than today's nasty, yet limited reality.

But it spells out what is terrifyingly possible if we, The Human Race, neglect to tackle these events. We must limit Global-Warming, or the sea-level will rise and swamp our coastal-margins - home to 5 billion people; and we must rapidly develop anti-flu vaccines.

Bill Gates is now (March 2020) putting $100 million into testing thousands of molecules, currently used in other medicines, that could discover a fast route to a cure for Coronavirus.

The whole world must act as one, to neutralise this invisible virus - and must continue to act as one to limit sea-level-rise. Both these deadly threats have no political or geographic boundaries. Regardless of our colour, creed, credit-rating, age, or location, we are all vulnerable. THE WISDOM OF ALICE WHITAKER, Alice, who is the prescient heroine of this tale, tells of eighty-percent of us dying. Alice and her brother find ways to survive the natural disasters, but Alice is hunted down and killed by the reactionary forces, who want to rebuild the world as it was. They want to re-create the systems that brought disaster and almost brought the human-race to extinction.

Will Alice succeed to rescue sanity out of madness? We sincerely hope so.

CORONAVIRUS KILLS: Really worth watching and distributing – Noel

******

No self-professed, credible blogger on economics, politics and science can avoid commenting on the Coronavirus, Covid-19; which is an evolved type of influenza. It is of the H1N1 family (Avian Flu - Swine Flu  - etc) that circulates among animals and humans. It kills by causing pneumonia; it drowns our lungs from the inside.

From the virus's emergence in China in the last quarter of 2019, and its so far tiny impact on the human population, of which it infects just 0.005% (5 persons in every 100,000) and dispatches to Heaven a mere 0.0007% (7 of us in every million), Coronavirus has a long way to go and to grow if it wants to be a significant epidemic or pandemic. Common Winter-Flu kills tens of thousands every year.

So what's the fuss? Coronavirus is a new-flu (pnuemonic /lung) variant and is unknown. Will it become a major threat to the human race? Will it rival the greatest pandemic of modern times, Spanish Flu?

SPANISH FLU:  ‘The largest ever pandemic in recorded history, when it is thought that up to fifty million people may have died, was caused by Spanish Flu’ in 1918/19 just as World War One was ending; so called because at first only Spain – which was a neutral country – reported the virus. In May 1918, in Spain, in that one month, eight million people caught the virus.’

‘Medical researchers now believe that this most notorious of all viruses originated in birds – in fact in the pigeons kept in the trenches for both food and for message carrying, then moved to chickens, ducks, geese and pigs, kept close to the war front in cramped pens to feed the troops, and then into the stabled horses, at the time still used in warfare, and onto cattle and into the human population. The cold and wet winter of 1918 and 1919 was a major contributory factor, as was the worldwide movement of troops – Britons, French, Germans, Russians, Americans, Australians, Canadians, Ghurkhas, other Indian regiments, Africans; and people from many other Commonwealth countries.’

‘The virus returned, though not nearly so lethally, in the winter of 1957, when seventy-thousand died in the United States…’
‘…and in 1968 when thirty-four-thousand Americans lost their lives.’
Few extrapolated the 1957 and 1968 statistics to mean that globally about seven-million died of the virus in 1957 and another three and a half million died in 1968.

*******

Spanish Flu killed the largest number, but other pandemics were many times more lethal. The many visitations of The Black Death killed about 2/3rds of the world; and changed the feudal system forever. European Measles and our Sexually Transmitted Diseases killed 80% of South Americans. Thank you for visiting us, Christopher Columbus; do come again.

Pandemics are dangerous and deadly.  Coronavirus containment is not working - the virus is breaking out all over. The most authoritative health institutions and medical scientist around the globe have only one remedy to stop the spread, "Sneeze into Tissues & Wash Your Hands." I find that advice to the populous very welcome - and it will reduce many common diseases caused by dirty habits. The human race must learn to wipe its own bottom and clean up its mess.

Hand washing might reduce HORIZONTAL (person to person) infections, but if Prof. Fred Hoyle, Chandra Wickramasinghe and John Watkins are right, most of the infections are VERTICAL (from the upper-atmosphere); which explains why the virus manifests rapidly in diverse countries simultaneously.

Viruses from Space:

Yesterday, I re-read Prof Fred Hoyle’s et al, 1978 book “Viruses from Space” i.e. from the upper atmosphere. Hoyle is world-famous for naming the Big-Bang theory. It argues and demonstrates that “acute-respiratory-tract-infections” e.g. flu’, coronavirus etc. and other epidemics are mostly caused by Vertical (falling from the sky) as opposed to Horizontal (person-to-person) transmission of viruses and thus pandemics.

In 1978, Hoyle’s team wrote “…especially regions lying downwind of the Himalayas, particularly China  and SE Asia.   …..making China the quickest and worst affected region of the Earth.” The book scientifically, statistically and credibly predicts that more viruses (some beneficial – most nasty) are swept by weather, topography, geography and the seasons to land in China, partly due to the Himalayas – and thus start pandemics.

The authors also show that earlier virus outbreaks occurred just south of the Alps, in northern Italy. Italy is now experiencing a coronavirus outbreak.

A chapter shows how viruses that fall onto deserts, where they are relatively inert, can be swept-up by sandstorms, to infect distant lands. This would apply to last week’s sandstorm from the Sahara to Tenerife.

Hoyle’s study questions the received and majority medical-science wisdom of 1978, and thus of now, “…once a false belief becomes established it is very difficult to get it out, essentially because the system invents supposed facts in order to support it.”

The puzzling global patterns of coronavirus outbreaks seem to be intelligently addressed and explained by Prof. Hoyle and his colleagues. It does not negate the urgent need to limit person-to-person transmission.

TREATMENT - It seems that nations, even America, must provide good quality health-care to all citizens, regardless of class, colour, creed or credit rating. They might all follow Britain and create free National Health Services. The US has about 40 million impoverished souls without Health Insurance. That number of corpses left in the gutters outside hospitals will certainly cause more, and varied, pandemics - and a major pollution problem.

ECONOMICS - What coronavirus will not do is crash the world economy. A mass pandemic will change economic drivers and necessities, but the task of surviving, curing and carrying on will immediately create new industries and activities. Pandemics won't destroy the electronic revolution and mass communications. Probably the reverse. In 1992, Gil Gordon (New Jersey) and I (London UK) wrote Teleworking Explained - how to utilise home-offices and work by wire. Teleworking /Telecommuting is now being recommended to help curb the pandemic. That, and the Wuhan-Kiss, i.e. greetings from 3 yards apart. The smart money will sell out of the affected industries (Travel? Crowd Activities?) and buy into the replacement industries (Amazon shopping? Genetic medicine? Telework?). For every business-model that goes down - 3 will spring up. There are 7 billion people to service. A new gold rush! Who will be first?  And we all still have to eat.

My bets include Tesla, Vestas Wind, Orsted and all the emerging green energy products. I think Oil, Gas and Coal are in their end-game. Spot the winners.

PROFESSIONAL MEDICAL ADVICE:

                                          COVID-19 ADVICE
A note from Dr. James Robb:

"Dear Colleagues, as some of you may recall, when I was a professor of pathology at the University of California San Diego, I was one of the first molecular virologists in the world to work on coronaviruses (the 1970s). I was the first to demonstrate the number of genes the virus contained. Since then, I have kept up with the coronavirus field and its multiple clinical transfers into the human population (e.g., SARS, MERS), from different animal sources.
The current projections for its expansion in the US are only probable, due to continued insufficient worldwide data, but it is most likely to be widespread in the US by mid to late March and April.
Here is what I have done and the precautions that I take and will take. These are the same precautions I currently use during our influenza seasons, except for the mask and gloves:
1) NO HANDSHAKING! Use a fist bump, slight bow, elbow bump, etc.
2) Use ONLY your knuckle to touch [public] light switches. elevator buttons, etc.. Lift the gasoline dispenser with a paper towel or use a disposable glove.
3) Open doors with your closed fist or hip - do not grasp the handle with your hand, unless there is no other way to open the door. Especially important on bathroom and post office/commercial doors.
4) Use disinfectant wipes at the stores when they are available, including wiping the handle and child seat in grocery carts.
5) Wash your hands with soap for 10-20 seconds and/or use a greater than 60% alcohol-based hand sanitizer whenever you return home from ANY activity that involves locations where other people have been.
6) Keep a bottle of sanitizer available at each of your home's entrances. AND in your car for use after getting gas or touching other contaminated objects when you can't immediately wash your hands.
7) If possible, cough or sneeze into a disposable tissue and discard. Use your elbow only if you have to. The clothing on your elbow will contain infectious virus that can be passed on for up to a week or more!

What I have stocked in preparation for the pandemic spread to the US:
1)    Latex or nitrile latex disposable gloves for use when going shopping, using the gasoline pump, and all other outside activity when you come in contact with contaminated areas.
2)    Note: This virus is spread in large droplets by coughing and sneezing. This means that the air will not infect you! BUT all the surfaces where these droplets land are infectious for about a week on average - everything that is associated with infected people will be contaminated and potentially infectious. The virus is on surfaces and you will not be infected unless your unprotected face is directly coughed or sneezed upon. This virus only has cell receptors for lung cells (it only infects your lungs) The only way for the virus to infect you is through your nose or mouth via your hands or an infected cough or sneeze onto or into your nose or mouth.
2) Stock up now with disposable surgical masks and use them to prevent you from touching your nose and/or mouth (We touch our nose/mouth 90X/day without knowing it!). This is the only way this virus can infect you - it is lung-specific. The mask will not prevent the virus in a direct sneeze from getting into your nose or mouth - it is only to keep you from touching your nose or mouth.
3) Stock up now with hand sanitizers and latex/nitrile gloves (get the appropriate sizes for your family). The hand sanitizers must be alcohol-based and greater than 60% alcohol to be effective.
4) Stock up now with zinc lozenges. These lozenges have been proven to be effective in blocking coronavirus (and most other viruses) from multiplying in your throat and nasopharynx. Use as directed several times each day when you begin to feel ANY "cold-like" symptoms beginning. It is best to lie down and let the lozenge dissolve in the back of your throat and nasopharynx. Cold-Eeze lozenges is one brand available, but there are other brands available.

I, as many others do, hope that this pandemic will be reasonably contained, BUT I personally do not think it will be. Humans have never seen this snake-associated virus before and have no internal defense against it. Tremendous worldwide efforts are being made to understand the molecular and clinical virology of this virus. Unbelievable molecular knowledge about the genomics, structure, and virulence of this virus has already been achieved. BUT, there will be NO drugs or vaccines available this year to protect us or limit the infection within us. Only symptomatic support is available.
I hope these personal thoughts will be helpful during this potentially catastrophic pandemic. You are welcome to share this email. Good luck to all of us!"

FROM CHAOS THEORY TO ORGANISMS - TIME TRAVEL

I have just finished the draft of a new time-travel novel, Isaac Newton & The Alchemist's Lad - The Perils of Entanglement, featuring Isaac Newton from 1666 and present-day ten year old Fred - who tells Isaac "My teacher says you were quite bright - in your day." The book is a very readable adventure for young-adults and the young at heart, which has the added bonus of introducing and explaining particle and astrophysics. It misstates two new-physicists' howlers - that you can no doubt spot and untangle as you read.

The means by which they travel through time from 1666 to 2018, then back again, is based on the well attested and fully accepted sub-atomic or quantum theory of entanglement. Einstein at first refused to accept the theory of entanglement, dubbing it "spooky action at a distance." Not only did the spooky action spook Albert but the theory also allows - or requires - that particles communicate over these spooky, sometimes long, distances, at faster than the speed-of-light. This, as you all know is impossible because Einstein proved that "Nothing travels faster than Light!"

His theories have been subjected to hundreds of experimental tests over the past one-hundred years, and have been conclusively proved to be correct.

Basically, when two photons are created from the splitting of another particle - often from electrons - the two new photons waste no time and zip off at the speed of light in opposite directions. Though they might journey to the horizon of the Observable Universe, forty-three-point-seven billion light years distant (so you can double that distance if they go to opposite horizons) - the photons, entangled photons, are in communication at all times. They are like identical-twins who are separated at birth and taken to different continents without any communication - yet still look the same, wear the same clothes, have the same hairstyles and both like pistachio ice-cream. They are mysteriously in touch. They are communicating - somehow. They are spookily "entangled".

What irked Einstein even more about these impertinent photons, was and is the fact that they were separating at the speed of light, three-hundred-thousand kilometres per second; and so it was and is impossible for them to receive messages from each other - because "Nothing travels faster than Light". No signal could ever catch up with the flighty photons. But, science proves and has proved time after time, that they are in touch. They chat to each to other all the time.

All objects in the universe, all things, are made of compressed photons. You, me, your parents and pebbles on the beach are all made from photons. An atomic explosion of, say just 100 lbs of uranium releases and  reveals all the photons it contains in an instant, immense explosion as the light and heat locked in there for eons is freed and made visible. The photons are entangled - then blow apart - but still communicating. So - I used this as a time travel mechanism. I teased out of Isaac Newton, with a radio beam, a few of his entangled photons. Because each was in communication, all the photons, trillions of photons, followed each other along the beam "Beam me up Scottie!"

By esoteric methods and science that I must keep secret - at the end of their journey from 1666 to 2018, the photons reassembled themselves in the right order and relationships - and re-made Isaac Newton - and he met Fred. The entangled photons knew their precise positions and functions to re-create Isaac. Time travel is made possible - without magic.

It occurred to me this morning that this power to disassemble and reassemble must also be true for the several trillion cells in the human body. They know their functions; they cooperate; they communicate; new cells know their roles in the business of life; trillions of these immensely complex little factories know what to do - to make an organism that functions - that has a brain - has will and that can sometimes think. BUT HOW?

Whether it is photons making a kilogram of uranium, or cells making a human; how do they know when there are enough? How do they know when to stop adding units to the object? How do they know how to confer a particular identity to the object - or to us?

Like Goldilocks and the Three Bears - these minuscule packets of energy know when the object is too hot, too cold or, miraculously, is just right. A new human baby grows from one, a single cell, to two-trillion cells in nine months. How does it know when it has assembled enough units to trigger birth? This sweet little baby then grows into a 17 stone football player - of about 56 trillion cells; all communicating and swapping information - in a very spooky manner. But how does this hairy heavyweight know where its boundaries are. Why not keep adding cells - randomly? Where does the template - the governing pattern reside? We think we know it is governed by DNA, by inherited DNA, but where is the template, the controller, to assemble trillions of tiny particles into functioning DNA? My guess is that it is in the Aether, in Space-Time, in patterns of electromagnetic light and radio waves.

Is it therefore possible, as I've imagined in my book, to dis-integrate, transport, and re-integrate the constituent parts of an object - of a human being - in full working order? Could we, one day in the future, use photon-entanglement at microscopic levels thousands of times smaller than a human cell, to separate the photons, persuade them to ride on a carefully calibrated radio beam - travelling or propagating even faster than light (in a timeless fashion) - and have them utilize their entanglement to bring all their chums with them, and re-form elsewhere in exactly the same relationships and functions as when they started the journey? Carefully managed - we could be immortal, as envisaged in SF movies where humans upload into computers - but without the need for computers.

"Beam me up Scotty" indeed.

______

The extraordinary, precise communications between cells, molecules, atoms, sub-atomic particles and templates which enable organisms to transcend the sum of their parts, to function - and aspire to act intelligently, are the mysterious mechanisms or force of life.

I want to explore the concept of a fully functioning human - whose parts are self-evidently communicating correctly, as nature intends - and who is communicating with his/her community; the community without which we would certainly die or never come to life - going into outer or "deep" space, progressively losing the communications with family, tribe, race and planet. Will this super-lonely body also lose the inner communications between all the particles - and thus disintegrate? Do our inner communications depend on our environment, the teeming electromagnetic ocean in which we swim, with, currently, seven billion other humans?

The "Isaac" time-travel novel above, imagines that if entangled particles communicate, then teasing a single particle to hitch-hike on a radio-beam will trigger the adjacent particle to follow, then the next, and the next - ad-infinitum. The proven, demonstrable spooky quantum-entanglement might, could, or should inform each particle of it's unique place - in its ordained and accepted order - in the original body (mass). On arrival, at the target of the radio-beam, the second (entangled) particle will attach  to the first, then the third will find its position, then the fourth, then the cascade of trillions of communicating particles will take their places - and rebuild the original body, in the new location.

Our bodies do not have a definitive "edge". The trillions of mutually dependent cells, each happily playing its appointed role, if examined under an electron-microscope, viewing the alleged boundary, skin or integument, are seen to be loosely attached. A few drift away from our skin at all times. If rubbed, millions fall away and scatter. Most house dust consists of discarded human skin cells. The skin is bombarded with incoming particles, rays, beams, light. Where our skin meets the universe there is a zone of constant interchange. There is no thin red line - or brown, black, yellow line of demarcation which says "This person stops here." But somehow, we know where we end. We know our permitted shape and size - and in turn all the cells know. And if they know their function and place, then so do the molecules, made of atoms, made of sub-atomic-particles, made of light - within our supposedly private person. They all know their place. All parts are communicating; communicating vital data and energy. If they get it wrong we die. We disintegrate, we fall apart.

For seventy or a hundred years or so - they get it right. From our entangled photons to our factory-like cells, all the bits get it right. And we live. We are the product of all these communications. "We" ourselves - our unique identities - exist as an intelligent organism (with some notable exceptions) only because "our" sub-atomic-particles, which in isolation we might regard as dead or inert packets of energy, constantly, tirelessly, persistently communicate - with meaning and purpose. We integrate these countless trillions of communications and make sense of them. We are brilliant examples of the Life-Force.

However, we are not alone. Counting only our seven-billion or so living primate relatives and leaving aside the billions of other living creatures - and assuming that only the Earth produces life, we are forever receiving and broadcasting electromagnetic signals to each other. Such signals alter our DNA. We are changed by everyone and by everything we encounter. These communications are possibly the energy and organisation that create the Life-Force.

If one of us drifts into deep-space, far from such life-giving communications and energies - too far to receive and send - momentarily happy to get away from it all, because as Sartre told us "Hell is other People" - would we survive?

In the vast ocean of life, we are bombarded with waves of coherent data and information. We are literally "informed" by the signals we receive (and send). Our skin passes on the electromagnetic data to our (entangled) inner cells and down to our entangled-photons. Without this maelstrom of information, of vital communication from the entire universe - would we cease to exist?

When we do eventually succumb, as our number is called, as our three-score-years-and-ten, with added time for good behaviour, runs out - and our personal identity communications cease - is the pattern of all our communications on record, still broadcasting out to the 43.7 b.l.y. horizon of the observable universe? Is our essential self still entangled? Do our very personal entangled photons bounce back from the edge of time and reassemble, reintegrate and form another, quite similar creation?
