POPE FRANCIS 1ST - 13 MARCH 2013

Superstitious meanderings and joking apart (as below) - the World last night welcomed a new Pope; a new, if 76 years old, Bishop of Rome, to lead 1.2 billion Catholics into the new era. I believe it is a cause for celebration, because Pope Francis 1st does seem to mark a revolutionary step forward for one of the oldest (I am prepared to be corrected) major organisations or empires the world has known. 

St Peter (died in AD 64) was the first Bishop of Rome - from sometime after 40 AD - a few years after Jesus Christ rose from the dead (Easter) and returned to Heaven. On that basis, the Catholic Church in Rome is one thousand nine hundred and seventy three years old. Most observers  and commentators round it up to two-millennia, two thousand years, for convenience. Pope Francis is the 264th or 266th Pope including St Peter - depending on how they are counted.

Saint Francis, the name chosen by Argentinian Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, comes in two complementary styles - St. Francis of Assisi (Italian 1181 - 1226) who loved animals and founded the humble and avowedly-poor Franciscan Order of Monks - and St Francis Xavier (Spanish 1506-1552) co-founder with Saint Ignatius Loyola (Spanish 1491-1556) of the intellectual, international and self-effacing Society of Jesus, the Jesuits, or The Pope's Commandos as they have been called. Both orders embrace poverty and simplicity and both are teaching orders. 

Pope Francis, a Jesuit with a good and gentle sense of humour, is renowned for his simple living - in a one room flat in Buenos Aries instead of his palace, using buses instead of chauffeur driven cars - and for his persistent advocacy and support for the poor. As a Jesuit, he should be clever and politically adept. As a traditional older cleric, he is reputed to be a conservative Catholic - probably, despite being a scientific chemist, with all the usual hang-ups and mistaken misapprehensions about celibacy, sinful sex and reproduction. 

My belief, reading the tea-leaves, tarot cards, crystal balls and the world's media, is that 2013 will be a pivotal year of great change for the human race - possibly partly due to the maturing and spread of the Internet - a miracle of human ingenuity and cooperation - and Pope Francis, who should have at least another 30 years in him, might be a significant power and force in the changes. 

We hope and pray they are changes for the better, ushering in a global era of Intelligent Cooperation.

It is a strong probability, supported by, it is conjectured, numerous ancient Illuminati, who must remain protected by anonymity, that Cardinal Ratzinger, currently The Bishop of Rome, who is almost certainly presumed by The Da Vinci Elect to be six hundred and sixty-six years old, or so ancient coded texts may reveal – was chosen to be groomed by the covert Satanic powers behind the Hitler Youth movement, to ascend from roots of fire and darkness to take the Throne of Saint Peter; and to prepare the twisted path, it is widely believed by those who may have studied such matters in great depth, For Him Who Rules the Earth, The Great Deceiver, The Last Pope …or is it The Antichrist – who has been ordained and prepared to climb the pinnacle of Earthly Power. Could it be this man - whose name can never be uttered?

WHEN?

It is widely believed that the last pope of the Catholic Church will succeed Pope Benedict XVI.  Many people believe that we are in "the end times."  That the signs are all around us.  St. Malachy, (d. 1148) Irish Bishop and Seer, produced an accurate list of future popes which began with Pope Celestine II in the year 1143. His list consists of a single line which gives a clue to the characteristics of each pope. From this list of 112 popes there is to be just one more after Pope Benedict XVI.

It is difficult to pack into a letter that a newspaper might publish, enough information to make a balanced argument. In a short letter, there is the danger of appearing to be bigoted, biased and one-sided. This is Politics by Sound Bite and is of no use to man or beast.

My letter below on the currently proposed Mansion Tax – i.e. “Let’s tax houses worth £2 million or more…” is punchy but too brief. My position is that I have studied and discussed Land Value Taxes (LVT) for some years – and see a place for them in liberating waste land, derelict factories and other neglected sites. This is what LVT has been successfully applied to in the USA and elsewhere, to kick-start failed economic black-spots. LVT is a way of forcing landowners to do something rather than nothing. It increases investment into dead areas and brings them to life.  I have gone as far as making a marvellous calculator to figure out the LVT rate.

I am waiting for LVT enthusiasts to suggest what rates will apply to which types of land or property.

One day there will be no money and no taxes - Read AD2516-After Global Warming, to glimpse this utopian future.

However, the endlessly resurrected old dead idea that land and houses should be taxed annually, regardless of them being bought or sold – which generates cash-flow – is flawed and dangerous. None of the proposers have paused to think it through and to calculate the consequences for a nation like the UK.  

In the 1930’s to 1960 many large houses, the mansions of their day, became such liabilities to their owners that they were forced-sold or sometimes given away – simply because the owners had too little income to repair them. In the 1920’s /1930’s US Depression, entire farms and estates were similarly abandoned for lack of maintenance, investment, labour and cash-flow.

The enthusiastic and simplistic idea that because a street of, say 20 houses, has a market value of £20 million and can therefore “afford” to pay say £2 million a year in capital tax – or even £200,000 a year – is infantile economics. The majority of homes have been bought on 25 year mortgages at say 7.5% and annual repair costs of 2.5%, the owners are cash strapped for the entire time – and when the mortgage is cleared, the owners are usually retired with a marginal income. The “market” value – usually pegged to current building costs – is only real if and when a sale is made at that value. If the whole street suddenly tries to sell – the value evaporates as suspicious, nervous buyers withdraw. This can be seen in districts in America where half-witted bankers and government throw families onto the streets – and board up their homes – for mortgage or rent defaults – and everyone loses. There is no asset value to tax.

The deluded Mansion Taxers have not the wits to see that all mansions subject to such taxes will rapidly lose their “market” value. Only people with large incomes, who like paying taxes, will buy the mansions; but at knock down prices. Extrapolate such taxes to ordinary homes and commercial properties and the entire built environment will become worthless. The value is only there now because families can visualise and be confident of affording to occupy and maintain the building – or land. Destroy the asset base of a nation and all commerce will stop. It is the destructive mad bad bankers’ dream – to monetise and liquidate everything. As long as you are a banker or government – controlling cash flow and money supply – you can buy everything at almost zero prices.  If you think it is lunacy to sell off the family silver – it is suicide to so burden land and property with fixed costs that nobody can afford.

At the base of these delusions of fixed “wealth” – always of other people’s wealth – is a complete lack of understanding of the Real-Economy and the Money-Economy. Both depend wholly and utterly on confidence – on faith – on goodwill – on never panicking into a downward spiral – of sufficient money-supply - on people remaining calm – doing their duty – cooperating - and never looking down. Money is not real – it is merely a paper or electronic representation of real things – it is a confidence trick. Test the reality of values in the Real-Economy – test them to destruction – and you will rapidly revert civilisation to bartering meat and potatoes and living off one-third of an acre – with a cow, a pig and a few hens.

Rather than destroy the whole of our carefully constructed society and its mysterious economic systems – Mansion Taxers should press for Tax-Haven assets to be repatriated. That is where most of the surplus cash, $21 trillion, is hidden – and it is already liquid; so rapidly collectible.

Like the crazy UK current fascist Big Brother Bedroom Tax, throwing families onto the streets if they have a ten by ten foot room not used for an Authorised Government Approved Purpose – any taxes imposed have to be payable; which is why most taxes are on current cash transactions – like wages, sales-taxes, etc. 

You cannot get blood out of a stone – or out of a house brick.

THE MAGIC MONEY TREES

The understandable desire to tax the apparent trillions locked up in mansions and estates, (Mansion Tax debate, Andrew Sparrow, Guardian 12 March 2013) in the absence of a cash sale is like the Window Tax, in that it ignores cash-flow and is doomed to failure. The alleged taxable value is an illusion. Taxing fixed assets annually has been tried and failed in many countries many times. We tried Development Land Tax in the 1970’s and that halted home building.

The UK land is 242,000 sq km or 60 million acres, worth, say, £5,000 an acre, or £300 billion. On the land we have about 25 million homes that would each cost £100,000 to build - £2.5 trillion. The ports, roads, schools, hospitals, power stations, wires, pipes, offices and factories would cost about another £2.5 trillion to build. The whole is worth, at current COST price, about £5 trillion – until you start taxing it. A 10% tax on our houses will raise £250,000,000,000 (two hundred and fifty billion) 35% of the UK’s £700 billion local and central Budgets. Job done! …you might think.

But what is missing from the equation is: (1) where on Earth do the taxed home/land owners beg, borrow or steal the £250 billion to pay the tax? Within 10 years all the value has gone – millions of distressed homes are forced to sell – with no buyers – and there is nothing left to tax. And (2) Work must be done. The basic land only has value if it is farmed or developed. Buy an acre of sodden, sullen woodland; take your spade on a grim winter’s morning and wring 5% value in cash from the wood and soil, year on year – then you might own £5,000 of land. Without the cash-flow and daily human maintenance, effort and ingenuity, taxed-fixed-assets are crippling liabilities. There are many examples of this in our recent economic history.

Delivering a head prefect’s put-down to his colleague Vince Cable, an experienced and skilled economist, who was arguing last week for more investment by government (Keynesian economics) into UK jobs – Trust Fund babe, posh public schoolboy and Prime Minister, David Cameron said “Some people seem to think there is a magic money tree. Well, let me tell you – there isn’t”

Thus he demonstrated yet again that head prefects may be the richest but are not always the brightest kids on the block.

He fails to understand that money does indeed, and only, grows on trees – or on similar God given growing plants. He fails to understand that “The Mountains of Debt” that give him nightmares, are owed to the savers in his own country. We borrow back our own money – mostly from our Pension Funds. Government is hired to keep it all in balance and in healthy circulation.

JAIL BAD BANKERS AND WITHHOLD BONUSES FOR TEN YEARS - SANITY AT LAST

Money is simply and only bookkeeping – whether the money is made of paper or gold or diamonds; or cowry shells or knots on a string. It is ONLY a means of keeping count of assets – of good things that we want and value. Money is a sophisticated step up from swapping things, such as bushels of wheat, braces of pheasants, roofing tiles, carts, cars, houses, cattle and wives and daughters. Instead of paying a restaurant bill with a BMW front wheel complete with locking nuts, we hand over $250 printed on paper; because it is more convenient and more rapidly greases the wheels of commerce.

The value behind money, underwriting money, and the reasons for trusting the value of money – are that 80% of the real-economy value comes from God – it does grow on trees, or sits in the ground. If it is edible – it almost certainly grew to be edible by absorbing sunlight and rain – on a tree, bush, shrub or stalk. If it is useful for making cars or pocket computers – it almost certainly came out of the ground as metals or rare earths; where God or the Universe left them for our convenience. God provides 80% of the real value.

The other 20% of the real value in the real-economy is human ingenuity, human sweat, human toil and human relationships, cooperation and integrity. Some lowly humble person, maybe Vince Cable, picks the crops or digs the metal – invents new and enticing things; renders them cleverly into shiny cell-phones or irresistible restaurant platters – or yummy chocolates – and offers them to his fellow humans.

From the contributions of sunlight, the planet Earth, some unimaginably complex weather systems – and Vince Cable’s ceaseless toil – we get nice things; God is in His (or Her) Heaven and all is right with the World. Our wealth does indeed grow on trees.

Then we get the plagues of bent bookkeepers. These are the people who prey on and pervert the processes of us converting the real-economy, with all its nice but unwieldy things that are difficult to swap without the intervention of “money”.  Now we get the bankers, the politicians, the gangs of Party loyalists, the lawyers, the bent accountants and auditors, the bribed bookkeepers – and hordes of their neophytes, familiars, vampires and leeches. They sit in the money circulation major arteries and suck the real-economy host dry – almost to the point of death. In some cases they do kill the host – and crawl away to infest another. 

These bean counters are vital and valuable if they are honest and reliable. When they become dishonest and unreliable and incredible – the money they offer as an intermediary swap for real things becomes valueless. At that stage the paper-money people, the crooks, have to be culled and eliminated. All their warped records of our real-transactions become null and void. They all have to be disposed of – and the real-economy starts again. New money is created and new ethical rules are introduced – and the World is peaceful, busy and wealthy for a new era – until the bookkeepers become corrupt again. The Information Society may be bringing these tedious fifty year cycles of petty crime and fiddling the books, stretching back over 5,000 years, to an end; then we can get on and become a consistently wealthy world.

Money is printed by governments to account for and represent the real things in the real economy. We hire the governors and bookkeepers to do this honestly and accurately. They become corrupt. We dispose of them – and start afresh.

The Sun continues to pour infinite energy on an almost limitless Earth and the majority of people happily add to the common-wealth and consume only a fair share. But, when society has too many takers and hoarders and not enough makers and sharers – we get bloody and destructive revolutions. Don’t get Even – get Mad!

EASTER MIRACLE - NEW LIFE

As Easter approaches, with its magical eggs, resurrection, seeds, planting, Moon and Sun Spring tides, vernal equinox (April 18th), parades, celebrations and ancient legends - we might contemplate the miracle of the creation of new life - particularly intelligent, human life.

We adult humans are very, very, very complex; being an organised organism of, it is rumoured, up to 100 trillion cells (brain, skin, hair, teeth, blood, nerve etc) each cell containing 2 inch spiral ladders or helices of DNA with 220 million spokes; all carefully placed; all magically operating and co-operating. Let me do the maths for you – it calculates as 22,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 or twenty-two thousand, billion, billion well ordered molecules, all doing what they are supposed to do – integrated to keep us alive and amused for seventy or more years – before we give up the ghost and disintegrate.

A human ovum or egg is the size of a full-stop in this text. An enthusiastic tail wagging spermatozoa is about 100 times smaller. When they combine, conception begins, the universe announces another miracle well beyond our comprehension, the full stop divides into two full stops – or a colon: and then into a cluster, in which a heartbeat, the pulse of the universe, spontaneously begins – and a wilful child starts its determined journey into a sensational period of “life” in this solar system, for three score years and ten.

This wilful cluster embeds itself into the safe haven of its mother’s womb and grows from the nourishment, information and care she provides. She in turn is often protected by the father – who brings food, furs and digital TVs, and lights fires to keep her and her embryo warm and fed.

We, the clever human race, conjecture that all the unique characteristics of this emerging new life form, a dissipative organism, are dictated by the merest wisp of an invisible string of chemicals called DNA.

Over nine months the baby will be given the energy to grow from the size of a full-stop, a single fertilised cell, to about seven pounds, 3,175 grams, 3.2 kilograms, estimated to be at least 2 trillion cells. Contrary to most opinions to date, which deemed the placenta and amniotic fluid inviolable; in this process, in this nutritious stream, science has recently learned that the mother’s DNA, genes, memes (cultural and traumatic experiences), immune responses – and harmful drugs, alcohol, nicotine and other pollutants – are passed to the baby. Equally, the baby passes DNA back to the mother.

Mothers always have their children in the back of their minds – now it seems that this is quite literally true. Fetal DNA can enter a mother's brain and remain there for decades, according to autopsies of female brains.

During a pregnancy, cells from mother and fetus can cross the placenta and survive for decades in the skin, liver and spleen – a phenomenon called fetal microchimerism.

MIXING IT WITH MOTHER

Natural transformation between mothers and foetuses. As its name implies, it is a natural mechanism used by some bacterial cells to take up DNA from the environment. This environmental DNA was, at one point, located in other bacteria. For instance, when bacteria die and disintegrate, their chromosomal DNA is released. Fragments of this DNA remain in the environment and are freely available to other living cells, including other bacteria. These naturally occurring DNA fragments can enter a living bacterium through its cell membrane, after contact with that membrane. If the DNA is double stranded, one of the strands will pass across the cell membrane into the cell, and the other strand will be dissolved, or hydrolyzed. Parts of the newly introduced single-stranded DNA molecule may then recombine with similar regions on the bacterial chromosome and become incorporated into the bacterium's genome.

Transcending the Placental Barrier - "It shows just how ubiquitous the exchange of these cells is," says Hilary Gammill of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. "We used to think of the placenta as a complete barrier." 

SCIENTIFIC SPECULATION

Humans have found that the templates for life-forms are not fixed, but are dynamic and change moment by moment. One implication is that species evolution happens far faster than Darwin supposed. Many scientists are looking for new templates that shape life – DNA is central to the research.  My own view is that these Templates are functions of The Aether-Matrix; Prof Rupert Sheldrake names the template medium “Morphic Resonance”  in his book The Science Delusion.

THE SCIENCE DELUSION

Most scientists look to DNA as the basic template of organisms. However, recently, biology, Epigenetics, medicine and science has adjusted and updated the consensus about what DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) does and how it does it.

The discovery, announced on 25^th April 1953, of the DNA double-helix string in every living cell, by Crick, Watson and molecular biologist Rosalind Franklin – who, without a Y chromosome and lacking a penis, was barred from Nobel Prizes – revolutionised our understanding of the templates of life, sentience, intelligence and consciousness.

From 1953 to 2011, the scientific convention had been that the 4 DNA bases, adenine (abbreviated A), cytosine (C), guanine (G) and thymine (T) – that make the millions of rungs of the DNA spiral ladder - were created at conception and thereafter “What God hath joined together, let no man put asunder” they remained in fixed order – obligingly fixed so that we could study them. This is no longer the consensus belief.

Richard Dawkins in his 1976 book The Selfish Gene, so fervently believed in this fixity that he built an entire upside down philosophy, a new religion, stating that humans are complex robots propelled by the anthropogenic, intelligent, godlike desires of DNA assembled into 46 packets of (selfish) genes – 23 from each parent; an erroneous if ingenious concept that he zealously impressed on most of science for several decades.

Post Dawkins, recent discoveries show that DNA in living cells changes continuously in response to internal and external forces - while DNA in dead cells such as old teeth, hair and bones is indeed fixed and legible for thousands of years. DNA analysis now tracks Homo-Sapiens back 340,000 years. Last year Harvard University Medical School recorded an illustrated book by coding inert, lab-made DNA, mailed it to another lab, and played it back. DNA packs a very high data-density punch.

Goldman and colleagues claim to have achieved a density of 2 petabytes (10¹⁵ bytes) per gram of DNA which, they calculate, would allow at least 100 million hours of high-definition video to be stored in a teacup

In conclusion, it seems that Rugby Forwards, with several hundred trillion cells, start as a single fertilised cell the size of a full stop, designed by the universe, with 23 genes from each parent – then spend nine months in their mother’s womb, where she  multiplies the cells by 2 trillion to make a baby – before it fights  its pugnacious way out into the world – to score in the All Nations Rugby Union matches – sharing DNA with  its team-mates in the hot baths and having significant bits of his anatomy ripped off, in the name of sport. I cannot improve on the report by Dick Teresi in New Scientist 9 March 2013 (page 32) entitled Resurrection Man (one s and two r’s) about Sam Parnia, director of resuscitation research at Stony Brook University Medical Center, US; who has just published, The Lazarus Effect: The science that is erasing the boundaries between life and death.

Sam Parnia and his medical team are able to bring people who have experienced cardiac arrest back to life, up to 7 hours after they have formally, finally, fatally and medically died. What I find fascinating is Sam Parnia’s altered view, from sceptic to investigator, on NDE or near death experiences. He says that his patients’ NDE’s, tunnels of light – finding Heaven etc - are NOT hallucinations. “If I injected these dead bodies with hallucinogenic LSD, they will not experience hallucinations”. The patients' brains and bodies are clinically dead but “Consciousness is not annihilated when you reach the point of death”.

 An epic Greek tragedy, Huhne-v-Pryce, is playing to the whole UK today. You saw the film, War of the Roses, where a civilised, divorcing couple fight to the death over who keeps the house, and you found it painfully unbelievable. This marital breakdown proves yet again that fact is far, far stranger than fiction.

Briefly: High flying, posh, public school, politician Chris Huhne MP, tipped to be the next Leader of the Liberal-Democrat Party, in 2003 tripped a road speed camera, incurring 3 more penalty points; was about to lose his driving licence, but instead his loyal wife – top economist Professor Vicky Pryce, of Greek extraction, claimed to be the driver and “took” the penalty points on her clean driving licence; which is a loyal and illegal little lie. Just 3 months later Huhne lost his licence on other traffic offences. Seven years later Minister for the Environment, The Rt. Hon. Chris Huhne MP dumped Vicky for his personal assistant – and it now transpires, had other lovers. Vicky vowed revenge – and via the media and lawyer friends she shopped Chris for lying to the police.

Lying to the police, even over a trivial traffic offence, is a VERY SERIOUS MATTER called Perverting the Course of Justice – tantamount to Perjury or lying in Court, which can carry a life-sentence. It has ruined several prominent British figures. What Vicky in her venomous, vengeful mood failed to consider was that it takes two to tango – if Chris had lied on the traffic forms – then so had she.  After a hugely expensive year in court, revealing all the skeletons in their family cupboards and upsetting their children, friends and colleagues – to the continuing delight of the media -  ruined and disgraced Chris pleaded guilty to Perverting the Course of Justice; Vicky pleaded “Marital Coercion” – he made me do it your Honour – but was found guilty. They both now wait for their sentences; “Which will almost certainly be custodial (i.e. jail)”.

The other two million Britons who said they would have taken such penalty points to save the licence of a spouse, colleague or friend – are reconsidering their position.

TAX EVASION: The reason I am interested in the case is that it concerns rich, powerful, professional people persistently lying with assumed impunity – until they get caught. Then it becomes very serious as questions are asked about who signed the forms; who signed the certificates; who advised the signing; and who took the oaths. 

Just as the two million merry motorists thought it was OK to fiddle the forms – until this case exploded across the front pages – so about 620,000 UK tax non-payers who have shovelled corporate and personal profits and assets to tax-havens and evaded UK taxes, still assume that “Its OK, everybody does it – and they’ll never find-out”.

“You will not be so cocksure, Sir, when you are clutching the bar at the Old Bailey”.

In the UK, the Office of Fair Trading that licenses UK loan sharks to charge whatever they can force borrowers to pay – legalising APR (annual percentage rates) charges from 1,000% to more than 4,000%, have expressed concerns about “repeat” or “roll-over” borrowers.

What it means is that the poorest and most desperate people – forced to borrow midweek or midmonth to buy food or travel to work – are trapped in a constant cycle of borrowing at Mafia Loan Shark rates – enforced by heavy legal penalties, courtesy of The British Justice System, stoutly defended by Prime Minister, The Rt. Hon. David Cameron MP – on behalf of the Free Markets, who are the richest in society.

The “industry” wormed its way into the UK from the USA, after Thatcher removed all caps on loan charges – setting the tone with her unprecedented, punitive and business wrecking Bank of England Base Rate at 17.5%, which crippled the UK for 20 years. She and Reagan opened the doors for gangs of sociopathic mediocrities to attack and leech off the efforts of their workmates, and to suck the economy dry.

The average grand total loaned by UK loan-sharks is about £1.2 billion. The average individual loan is £300 made to about 1 million customers, four times a year. At 4,500% a year – the £300 costs the borrower £13,500 – half the UK Living Wage.  The total of loans to households and businesses in the UK is about £1.2 trillion; so the Loan Sharks loans extend 0.1% of the credit.

In all justice, fairness and neighbourliness, here is what should be done – today: The Bank of England should add £1.2 billion to Quantitative Easing (QE); pay off all loan shark personal balances; revoke the loan-shark licenses; CAP all loans at a maximum of 5% - which is 10 times the current Base Rate – and set up a national Pay-Day-Loan facility via Post Offices – at 5% per annum.

For God’s Sake: Come on Sir Mervyn King – before you quit as governor of The Bank of England on your massive lifelong pension – do this good thing.

The City would not be in the slightest affected – they would not even notice the impact. The loan-sharks would take their ill-gotten gains back to the mean streets of USA.  The Courts would be cleared of much nasty business. Rents would get paid. The one million families would be greatly relieved. The QE impact would immediately assist the smallest businesses. Britons could hold their heads up again – instead of being complicit in some of the worst bullying this nation has ever known.

The Office of Fair Trading is handing the 50 biggest lenders a 12-week deadline to stop “widespread irresponsible lending”. Any firms which fail to co-operate will have licences revoked. The move comes after a damning OFT report into the sector.  The Government is also planning to limit the number of TV adverts firms can put out and the times they can advertise. New rules will force them to display interest rates clearly. But they will not be capped. One leading player in the the £2billion payday loans sector, Wonga, whose annual interest rate is put at 4,214 per cent, said that it plans to co-operate fully.
