New Scientist magazine, 17 November 2012, reports record ice loss in the Arctic , North Pole sea-ice. In September 2012, the sea-ice was less than ever previously recorded.
Link the New Scientist article to Hurricane Sandy flooding New York – and tremble. The implication for mankind is that the polar-regions are warming and that sea-ice is melting at about ten times faster than all previous scientific forecasts. The knock-on effect is that land-ice is melting faster at both Poles and thus is increasing sea-level; sea-ice melting hardly changes the sea-level because it is already on/in the sea. If all the land-ice melts, seas will rise by 300 feet.
In 2007, a 0.3 millimetre per year rise in sea-level was forecast “by the end of the century” – so that was alright then, no action needed – but the updated forecast now is a 2 metre rise “by the end of the century”. Two metres is 2,000 millimetres; divide it over 100 years and it comes to 20 millimetres a year rise in sea-level; which is actually 666 times faster than the 0.3mm calculated in 2007.
I think our climate scientists are still being too cautious; probably due to the immense pressure from low IQ politicians and industrialists, who cannot face reality. Should we be guided by and base our life plans on the crass stupidity of the short term vested interests of the dummy’s at the back of the classroom?
What will happen next? For the short term future read my frightening novel, e-book, OUT OF THE DEPTHS For the long term future, read my optimistic novel, AD2516 - After Global Warming to learn how mankind creates Utopia from 21st century chaos.
My view from wide reading over about 15 years, looking ahead as a Distinguished Futurist (a title conferred on me by Brian Aldiss), is that the land based ice is in the process of meltdown; that this process is now irreversible in the short term – in the next few hundred years – and that the 80% of mankind and womankind who live on the coastal margins, about 5 billion of us, will have to migrate to higher ground; as described in my two novels. And just in case – buy a rubber boat.
WHEN? Even specialist global-warming guru, Professor James Hansen, of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, NY, cannot or will not hazard a guess on how fast the 5 kilometre deep Polar ice mountains will melt. As I have advised before – make ice blocks in your fridge and conduct some meltdown experiments of your own. For the time being, that is all the data available to you on timing.
