"If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear" "Data collection is for National Security" |
INTERNET SURVEILLANCE - YOUR MOST PRIVATE ENCRYPTED DATA - BANK, CREDIT CARDS, TAX & MEDICAL RECORDS - IS BEING READ BY THOUSANDS OF PUBLIC SERVANTS AND THOUSANDS MORE INTERNET TECHNOLOGY COMPANY EMPLOYEES. SOME OF THESE SNOOPERS ARE YOUR NEIGHBORS, OR YOUR BOSSES, OR YOUR COLLEAGUES, AND YOUR DATA WILL ALMOST CERTAINLY, SOON BECOME ACCESSIBLE TO ON-LINE ORGANIZED CRIMINALS.
e.g. Edward Snowden is just one of thousands of sub-contractors who had access to all the data - as was the military whistle blower, Bradley /Chelsea Manning, who was one of ten thousand who had access to the data he published. If data is in the hands of thousands - it is only a matter of time before it falls into the wrong hands.
We learn today that nothing is sacred, private or secret. All our communications are intercepted, read, stored and available to all governments. The Guardian Newspaper in partnership with The New York Times today publishes more from the NSA whistle blower Edward Snowden.
How will you feel when your "sins" are revealed to your families, friends and colleagues; when ten-thousand suppliers learn your "preferences" and bombard you with offers, and your medical insurers deny you health cover? But, given that governments have been collecting the open and encrypted data for a decade or more - they must know where the illicit $32 trillion tax-haven assets are buried, so why won't they collect them and reboot the World Economy? A question for the G20 meeting in St Petersburg, Russia today, which is supposed to be discussing the economy, jobs, industry and tax evasion. Could it be that most of our top people hide their income and assets - and that "Only Little People Pay Tax"
The US National Security Agency, NSA, reads our encrypted communications (all our bank and credit card card transactions are encrypted) under their BULLRUN program; while the UK's Government Communications Headquarters, GCHQ, calls their program EDGEHILL. Both the names are taken from old civil war battles. These agents have no legal mandate to intercept all our data. They have moved beyond government control.
"IF YOU HAVE NOTHING TO HIDE YOU HAVE NOTHING TO FEAR"
McCarthy, whose Witch Trials trapped "Reds under the beds" and ruined and imprisoned hundreds of worthy, innocent Americans; and the FBI head, J Edgar Hoover, who kept secret files on most politicians and elite citizens - were both social data collectors who abused their positions and used the data to wreck the lives of honest citizens who "Had nothing to Hide and nothing to Fear" from their benign government.
Uncle Joe Stalin, credited with arresting and murdering tens of millions of his Russian neighbors, put spies in all groups and even in families to root out "Thought Crimes" that might challenge his dictatorship; the victims probably thought they had "Nothing to Fear" from Stalin's data collections. Hitler tracked and slaughtered millions of Jews, Gypsies and Disabled people, using efficient government data. And the East German STASI effectively controlled every aspect of all citizens lives using their infamous files - which are still revealing that government's nasty secrets. All such data collections are always justified as being for "National Security".
THE FUTURE
Internet engineer, Bruce Schneier, is calling on the Internet Engineering Task Force to re-engineer the entire internet and make our communications safe. It is technically feasible, but will take a long time. I doubt if it can be protected in the long term from determined governments, like the US, UK, China, Russia, EU etc. and from major internet companies.
Meshnet - an alternative peoples' internet is growing; from small and humble beginnings. New Scientist magazine says that all data via Meshnet is automatically encrypted - but governments are particularly determined to read encrypted communications - and today's news tells us they have been cracking encryption codes for a decade.
Will influential experts such as the Oxford Internet Institute, OII, step up and demand that governments and industry back-off and stop their insane interception of all data? Will Google, Microsoft, Samsung, Dell, Apple etc. demand that government (and themselves) respect their customers' privacy?
Will our Courts and Judiciary protect our rights? Probably not, as they are all public servants, ultimately appointed and paid by the government. And their argument will be "It is for your own good".
So - we and whole world will muddle along with the existing system, our privacy shattered, our lives on record in County Hall and in the bowels of every government in the world that has the resources to intercept our data - or can buy it from interception agencies (which include all our familiar IT and telephone companies). This Mexican stand-off will persist until the criminals get our data - including all that $32 trillion tax-evasion-capital-flight data (mostly illegal - what a prize!) - or a government goes rogue and murders or robs so many of its citizens that we all, even the most sanguine ostriches, sit up and take notice. Then billions of alarmed citizens will abandon their gadgets and revert to letter post and meetings.
I see this issue as so immediately important and vital for the long term civilizing of mankind /person-kind that I have copied my earlier article Thursday, 1 August 2013 SURVEILLANCE - TERRORISTS - PEDOPHILES - TAX-EVADERS and reproduce it below.
These neurotically incontinent snoopers must not be allowed to sabotage The Internet - and all that it promises in the education of all people - and for world trade. Will our great leaders at the G20 meeting find time to discuss this - and recovering the stolen $32 trillion tax dollars - alongside trying to start another daft war, to feed more billions to The Defense Industry (that loses all its data).
1 August 2013 SURVEILLANCE - TERRORISTS - PEDOPHILES - TAX-EVADERS
Update 19 Aug 2013 - UK spooks hold travelers like David Miranda for 9 hours of interrogation in London airports. These arrest powers apply to all UK ports. You might like to re-route via Paris, or Brussels, Rome or Siberia - to save time.
TOTAL SURVEILLANCE - The Guardian newspaper prints another exclusive scoop today; telling us aboutX-KEYSCORE which is the search engine used by spies to spy on Americans and all of us - from their desks. They do know everything about all internet users- about 3 billion people - and are legally permitted (in USA law) under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act FISA to track anyone without specific warrants, oversight or permission.
UPDATE - 2 Aug 13. Another exclusive for The Guardian, detailing NSA and GCHQ partnership. And the Guardian's informant, saint or sinner Edward Snowden, gets Putin's protection. As they say, or used to say, "Read All About It! Also - Silvio Berlusconi is guilty of 2002-03 $7 million tax-evasion, with a 4 year sentence (he won't go into prison) which debars him from political office. He has 3 more trails pending. If "They" can get Signor Berlusconi for past false-accounting - they can get anyone. Move your assets back on-shore, before the knock on the door.
[ Update - 3 August 2013 - Yet another exclusive for the Guardian (is this the best newspaper in the world?) reporting that all global telephone companies on government orders intercept all telephone traffic - conversations, emails, internet use - and store 21 Petabytes every day - the equivalent of 192 times The British Library contents - daily. In summary - Big Brother uses PRISM, Tempora, X-Keyscore, and "Exceptionally controlled information" from "intercept partners" (the telecos). In Britain GCHQ calls it Mastering the Internet and Global Telecoms Exploitation. Next will come THE THOUGHT POLICE. The Spanish Inquisition would be slavering with lust and envy.] Use the Guardian Link

The NSA/ CIA/ FBI / All Big Telecos / Your Local Parking Enforcer / The School Janitor / Your Neighbors; and all others who secretly read your emails etc; have back tracked on claims made to the Senate that hacking the history of telephone conversations has stopped large numbers (maybe 50 in 10 years) of global terrorist attacks. In Britain the big idiot-crowd-pleasing excuse for The Thought Police is massed pedophiles murdering millions of innocent children, trapped via the internet (11 children a year - killed mostly by their parents).
GCHQ Cheltenham, UK - 6,132 staff monitoring telecommunications. |
Now that we know that they know - will governments repatriate the tax-evasion-capital-flight for investment into national industries - and reboot the global economy? And if not; why not? My guess is that the majority of top people - in every walk of life - are complicit in tax-evasion. And $32 trillion buys a lot of friends. But, by law, all the "Funny-Money" can be tax assessed and brought home - pending the "owners" proof that it is all tax-paid and legal. Now would be a good time.
