LIFE, THE UNIVERSE, AND EVERYTHING (& GRAVITY)

LIFE, THE UNIVERSE, AND EVERYTHING

WE WISH YOU A HAPPY AND A HOLY CHRISTMAS

UPDATE 23rd DEC 2019

My concept of what gravity is rather what it does, relies on (1) light having slight mass, pressing in from a horizon or surface of 32.7 .b.l.y, the external force; and (2) the Casimir Effect, reducing light or electromagnetic waves within objects, the internal pull or vacuum.

Hendrik Casimir 1909 - 2000, got hardly a mention or any support in his lifetime. Few scientists have evaluated his theories and experiments. This New Scientist article raises his reputation - and spells out the exclusion of wavelengths within masses. "Without whom, none of this would have been possible." Follow the tab "gravity" to track my concept back to its roots.

https://www.newscientist.com/article/2226783-heat-can-quantum-leap-across-a-totally-empty-vacuum/

By Leah Crane, New Scientist 21/28 December 2019.
In a strange sort of quantum leap, heat can move across an area of complete vacuum without being carried by any particles at all. Instead, minuscule quantum fluctuations in the vacuum allow heat to leap between two objects that aren’t touching each other or emitting any form of light.
A layer of vacuum is normally a very good insulator, as anyone with a drinks flask knows, but at the quantum level, even a total vacuum isn’t completely empty: it is roiling with quantum fluctuations of energy.
In 1948, Dutch physicist Hendrik Casimir predicted that those fluctuations could create a force that pulls two objects in a vacuum towards one another in what is now called the Casimir effect. It was theorised that this effect could also cause heat to jump across a vacuum, but that was expected to take place at such small scales that it has never been measured before.
Hao-Kun Li at the University of California, Berkeley, and his colleagues used the Casimir effect to demonstrate heat leaping between two tiny drum-like membranes. The two membranes were placed, in a vacuum, just about 300 nanometres apart – separated by less than 5 per cent the width of the average red blood cell – and each was attached to a reservoir of a different temperature.
The heat from the reservoirs caused the two drums to vibrate, the hotter one faster than the colder one. Because of the Casimir effect, those two sets of vibrations became coupled together at a quantum level, so the hotter membrane transferred heat to the cooler one until both were vibrating at a similar rate. This meant they had a similar temperature.
According to classical physics, there is no way to transfer vibrations from one membrane to the other without some sort of particle, like a photon, but with quantum fluctuations and the Casimir effect it is possible, says Li. “So the vibration of one object can affect the vibration of another object.”
This could be a useful tool in computing, says John Pendry at Imperial College London. “Heat is a big issue in nanotechnology,” he says, because it limits the number of computations a circuit can do, and how fast.
Now that this effect has been demonstrated, it could be used to cool circuit boards thousands of times faster than simply waiting for them to radiate the heat away, says Pendry, which could allow us to build faster computers.

UPDATE 17th Dec 2019

My concept of gravity (below) needs a mechanism to create the first particles, to spin straw into gold, and to kick-start the formation of mass from pure energy (whatever pure energy is). From such minuscule dusty particles, the first gravitational bodies might grow.

This New Scientist article, 14th December 2019, could be about one such mechanism.

STATIC ELECTRICITY MAY PULL DUST TOGETHER TO MAKE PLANETS. Tobias Steinplitz, University of Duisberg-Essen in Germany, dropped a container of glass-beads of 0.4 millimetres each, down a 120 metres vacuum tower. The beads gained charge from static electricity and clumped together. Planets, forming from dust, encounter "the bouncing barrier" at the transition from "fluffy" masses to solid masses. These millimetre sized masses formed in this Glass-Bead-Game experiment indicate that that the bouncing barrier might be overcome - and enable planets to coalesce from dust.  My idea then follows - Casimir Glue and Universal Pressure of the entire electromagnetic spectrum (light) is the gravitational force.

UPDATE 6 DEC 2019:

...The pair modelled what could happen when dark matter meets a white dwarf weighing between 1 and 1.4 times the mass of the sun. White dwarfs are mostly made of electrons held apart by the rules of quantum physics, and a dwarf this large should have enough internal pressure that a black hole could form within it.**
Bramante and Acevedo suggest that when dark matter falls into the white dwarf at about 1 per cent of the speed of light, it is much hotter than the material that makes up the star. As the dark matter interacts with the star, it cools down and collects at the centre.
If enough of it clumps together, it will collapse under its own gravity into a tiny black hole nestled within the heart of the star.
“It would be something like the size of a proton, but it’s still extremely massive,” says Bramante, meaning it would have a lot of mass. Depending on the size of the black hole and of the white dwarf, it could suck in the star’s material within a millisecond.
....need to understand how to meld the rules of quantum physics and general relativity into a theory of quantum gravity, which is one of the biggest challenges in physics today.
** I see this another way. Following my idea of "what is gravity", the central black-hole forms from an absence of (vacuum of) electromagnetic energy - an outer mantle of matter that excludes most wavelengths - pressed in by the ocean of the full range of universal electromagnetism (light). It is interesting that "the star's material could be sucked in within a millisecond". That's a lot of mass or energy being sucked-in; surely, what goes in must come out? Out via an associated or entangled white-hole perhaps?

NB: Planck temperature / Absolute Hot.  Contemporary models of physical cosmology postulate that the highest possible temperature is the Planck temperature, which has the value 1.416785(71)×1032 kelvins. Wikipedia.

UPDATE 30 NOV 2019:

Mystery of the mass of the neutrino could soon be solved. New Scientist 30 November 2019. Layal Liverpool reports on the work of Christian Weinheimer & team, at the Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino Experiment, University of Munster, Germany; who says that mass of a neutrino is 500,000 times less than an electron. It weighs in at 1.1 electronvolts (with a limit of 1.1 EVs). "Neutrinos are a billion times more abundant in the universe than atoms, so even tiny neutrino masses would make a big contribution to the mass in the universe." (arxiv.org/abs/1909.06048) -

My idea for gravity requires that light, the electromagnetic spectrum, has mass. For the past 100 years, popular science has claimed it is massless /weightless. Light is not nothing; it is something. It has mass; across the 32.4 bly observable universe the ocean of light, and neutrinos, have sufficient mass to power gravity. The neutrino was also described as massless. This measurement adds to the possibility of the existence of the Luminiferous Aether.

Update - 1 NOV 2019 The Luminiferous Aether lives! Possibly.

"Einstein killed the aether. Now the idea is back to save relativity  - The luminiferous aether has become a byword for failed ideas. Now it is being revived to explain dark matter and dark energy, and potentially unify physics."   https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg24432543-300-einstein-killed-the-aether-now-the-idea-is-back-to-save-relativity/
Freelance writer, Brendan Foster, St Paul, Minnesota, writes in New Scientist 2 Nov 2019, of renewed if somewhat embarrassed, interest from physicists thinking of resurrecting the Aether. Victorians imagined this fixed energy-ocean of light-bearing and light-transmitting material. Einstein said he did't need it - so science has dismissed it (wrongly) for nearly 100 years. Being  a non-scientist with no reputation to protect, I have long included The Aether in my ideas - and have concluded my overview of Life The Universe and Everything with a slide (see 23 of 23 below) that claims that the Aether is in-formed and re-formed by every event in the universe - and that this ocean of energy communicates the constant changes to all locations. I think the Aether comprises all the light & radio signals from all phenomena. How an individual signal surfs this ocean and retains its identity is a mystery. But, we have millions of examples of such transmitted robust identities.

I now suppose that patterns such as DNA are "recorded" as light-waves-particles in the Aether. That series of slides, together with my idea of gravity (on this page), also include speculations on the elusive Dark Energy & Dark Matter.

It is worth reading. There is possibly, even probably, the germs of ideas that will break the present log-jam and lead to The Theory of Everything.

Update - 28 OCT 2019. In the beginning was radiation, then hydrogen, then helium. An article in New Scientist 13th July 2013, No Laughing Matter, by Chanda Prescod-Weinstein, assistant professor of physics and astronomy, University of New Hampshire - on the shortage of Earthly helium; reminds me that the current consensus is that the Big-Bang came first. Most scientists concur that it emerged or exploded from an unknowable, indefinable point of infinite density (infinite is non-scientific), as a minuscule globe (we have no idea of the shape or size) of intensely hot radiation. As the radiation expanded and cooled (eventually cooling down to the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation of -273 Celsius that pervades the observable universe), Hydrogen formed or precipitated, the hydrogen clouds cooled and clouds of helium precipitated. Then those clouds coalesced and formed elements, then stars etc - and the still expanding universe emerged - driven and formed mostly by gravity.

This consensus does not rule out my theory of gravity.

Gravity is the relative absence or reduction of the pressure of the radiation that fills the universal ocean of radiation, which is from 13.7 to 43.7 billion-light-years deep. Contemplate "The ever tightening knot of gravity, ultimately resulting in black-holes" and "Counter-intuitively, the centre of the Sun is very dark" because the centre is most "shaded" or protected from or excludes the universal radiation. (NB between masses as per Casimir). The external radiation is the PUSH and the internal partial absence of radiation is the PULL of gravity. NCH March 2015     e-mail   noel@noelhodson.com

The radiation of the observable universe, comprises all wavelengths of radiation - or light. in matter, where a shadow is cast, some wavelengths are excluded. The universal external pressure is greater than the internal pressure, the precipitated matter coalesces, a gravitational object forms. The force or energy of gravity emerges. (Search the GRAVITY label at the end of this page to read the emergence and logic of this theory).

BORIS & JENNIFER ARCURI

JENNIFER ARCURI -  BORIS JOHNSON

7TH OCTOBER 2019

FOA Layla Moran MP – Lib-Dem -  at Westminster
Dear Ms Moran,

The BBC reported that you recently raised questions in The House about Boris and Ms Arcuri. As a once time audit manager and advisor to about 500 Start-Ups /Oxford Research Science Park, Southbank Technopark, Innovation centres, etc.

I became intrigued and have just checked at Companies House. Jennifer Arcuri seems to be as bold as brass – a point for her straightforwardness – but the two companies are what we would have called “Funny-Money” companies, and so are worth examining. They both seem to be (1) insolvent – and (2) to operate from Macclesfield /Prestbury, Cheshire.

These two facts would usually disqualify them from London /Innovation Grants. Curiouser and curiouser. I thought it might interest you.

Two of my CCs friends above are in your constituency. I am  next door in East Oxford, but we have joined the Lib-Dems and will vote for the Stop Brexit party.

Best wishes – Noel Hodson

Summary and Companies House data - 7th Oct 2019

(CHECK WITH A LARGE AUDIT COMPANY OR COMPANY LAWYER)

Below are the Companies House documents for Jennifer Arcuri’s two companies: Hacker House Ltd Inc 9 July 2015 – 1st Director Jennifer Arcuri - Occupation “Ethical  Hacker “ – a £100 off the shelf company and The Innotech Network Ltd. Formed 28 Feb 2013 – a £100 Off-the-Shelf company 1st Director Jennifer Arcuri.
Both companies traded from Mathew Hickey’s address/es (he moved twice) in Macclesfield Cheshire.  (So I don’t think they qualify for London grants/funds etc.)
Most of the activity is at/from 9 Bollin Mews, Prestbury, Cheshire ( was this rented at £1,400 pm?).
FUNNY – MONEY ACCOUNTS:
Innotech Network is a “Technology and New Media Company” – Last Accounts Y/E March 2018 show it £356,000 (amended to £289,000) in debt. (i.e. insolvent)
Hacker House Ltd    Last Accounts Y/E July 2018 show it £715,000 in debt – BUT of that £713,000 is owed to Jennifer Arcuri. – (so also insolvent)
Because the two companies were /are insolvent – they would not normally qualify for Innovation Grants /funds.
Co-Director in Hacker House Ltd is Mr Mathew James Hickey “Cyber Consultant”. British - He lived in Macclesfield Cheshire then moved to a £400K Town House, 9 Bollin Mews,  in Prestbury – the football-millionaires’ village. 9 Bollin Mews may be rented.

They both moved to the USA in September 2019.

The two companies re-registered at the same time, Sept 2019, moving to an accommodation address in Fleet St.

Cheshire address at centre of Boris Johnson Hacker House controversy

A house in Cheshire is at the centre of a controversy over the friendship between Prime Minister Boris Johnson and model turned businesswoman Jennifer Arcuri.
A £100,000 grant was made in February this year to Arcuri’s training company Hacker House, which was registered at 9 Bollin Mews in Prestbury, near Macclesfield, up until this afternoon.
Last weekend The Sunday Times reported that Arcuri had joined trade missions led by Johnson and received thousands of pounds in sponsorship grants when he was London Mayor, between 2008 and 2016.

The Hacker House registered address - and the correspondence address of Arcuri, one of two directors of the company, along with Matthew Hickey - was changed shortly after 3pm this afternoon, following questions in the House of Commons. The Companies House registered address was changed to one on Fleet Street in London.

Lib Dem MP Layla Moran, asking an urgent question, said the government's Cyber Security Immediate Impact Fund - under which the grant to Hacker House had been made - was meant to be for UK-based initiatives only.

“We now know that Hacker House is not based in the UK," Moran told MPs. "The Sunday Times reports that its owner, Jennifer Arcuri, moved back to the USA in June 2018. These grants weren't open for application until November.

"The registered address of the company is, in fact, a house in Cheshire and the current occupant, apparently, sends any post addressed to Miss Arcuri back to sender."

Labour's deputy leader, Tom Watson, added: "As I understand it, Hacker House is a company headquartered in California. The principal owners of the company live in the United States.

"The company claims to have employees in London but refuses to reveal who they are or where they are. It is very difficult to see how the company fulfilled the criteria for these grants."

However, junior minister Matt Warman insisted Johnson had "no role whatsoever" in awarding a grant to Hacker House. He said the government has launched a "review" of the £100,000 award made in February this year, but insisted it had been an "open, transparent and competitive process".

So far, £47,000 out of the £100,000 grant, has been paid to Hacker House under the government's Cyber Security Immediate Impact Fund, with the remainder put on hold until the review has been completed.

GRAVITY & THE COSMIC WEB

ARTIST'S IMPRESSION OF HYDROGEN FILAMENTS
CONNECTING GALACTIC-CLUSTERS
9 Oct 2019 - NB - An analogy: Like at the lip of a waterfall, the pull and push of gravity on wavicles of light (electromagnetic particles and radiation) is becalmed until they are very close to the object (planet, star, asteroid etc.) then they cascade inwards/downwards.

4 October 2019

"THE COSMIC WEB" - Recent observations indicate that there is no such thing as empty space. Space, even the most remote, oldest and darkest "empty space" between clusters of galaxies, is filled with wispy filaments of hydrogen gas. These filaments connect galaxies and clusters of galaxies. Where the filaments cross each other, the hydrogen coalesces and forms or precipitates heavier matter. Over billions of years the specks of matter get together and form galaxies. It is speculated that such immense filaments of hydrogen are (or were, as we are seeing them as they were 10 billion years ago) constantly forming and feeding new galaxies.

The Cosmic Web theory tends to affirm or at least to not contradict the concepts that, over 20 or 30 years, have led to my ideas of how particles form, how mass forms and ultimately what gravity is. (Follow label "Gravity" at the end of this page).

This old set of presentation slides (originally circa 1990) shows the basis of my speculations of how mass is formed (go to slide 10) which paints a picture of light waves colliding and spiraling inwards. It was puzzling over these concepts that triggered my "What is Gravity?" theory. I still think the theory has merit. So, perhaps science should also be looking for the absence of mass, or "Casimir Glue" inside the shells of mass; as well as looking for new sub-atomic-particles or gravitons.

The existence of inter-galactic-cluster filaments also supports Fred Hoyle's and Chandra Wickramasinghe's concepts - which once proposed that particles and atoms and molecules are continuously created in "empty space". They extrapolated these ides to propose their "Viruses in/from Space" and Panspermia  ideas. The tireless and constantly derided proponents of The Electric Universe -  Wallace Thornhill & David Talbott, who have for decades argued that galaxies are formed and connected by electric currents - will perhaps welcome The Cosmic Web; and justifiably say "I told you so."

SCIENCE MAGAZINE 4TH OCTOBER 2019:

Glowing filaments of the cosmic web

Most gas in the Universe lies in the intergalactic medium, where it forms into sheets and filaments of the cosmic web. Clusters of galaxies form at the intersection of these filaments, fed by gas pulled along them by gravity. Although this picture is well established by cosmological simulations, it has been difficult to demonstrate observationally. Umehata et al. mapped emission from the intergalactic medium in an area around galaxies that are starting to form a cluster (see the Perspective by Hamden). They found that the gas is arranged into filaments, whose position and velocity correlate with star-forming galaxies, supporting the theoretical picture.

THE MOTHER OF PARLIAMENTS SHUT DOWN BY THE FATHER OF LIES

PROPAGANDA EVIL-GENIUS JOSEF GOEBBELS
PERSUADED HALF OF EUROPE TO SLAUGHTER JEWS & MINORITIES
'Make the lie big, keep it simple, keep saying it and eventually they will believe it'
We enter the Reichstag to arm ourselves with democracy’s weapons. If democracy is foolish enough to give us free railway passes and salaries, that is its problem... We are coming neither as friends or neutrals. We come as enemies! As the wolf attacks the sheep, so come we.  GOEBBELS (WW2 CAUSED 60 MILLION DEATHS).

9 Oct 2019: Letter to UK colleagues who fear the collapse of the Euro.

Should we short the Euro?

Reviewing the statistics and economic graphs – there are no obvious signs that the EU or the EURO are about to crash. Brexit and the China-USA arguments pose a threat to the rate of growth of the global economy – via changes in tariffs. Yesterday’s UK.Gov publication of likely post-Brexit IMPORT tariffs poses threats to world trade; but are not the central factor. Some UK industries will be wiped out by dumping of inferior goods.

Far more important to the UK, and to the EU because we are the 2nd largest EU economy after Germany being 16% of EU GDP, are the UK’s EXPORT tariffs. No-Deal will force us, the UK, onto WTO tariffs ranging from 5% to 48%. These are added to our export prices. Pre-Brexit, most of our exports to the EU are tariff free, and via the EU-deals with other blocs, tariffs are low (not WTO imposed).

ALL major forecasters predict loss of trade/sales equivalent  to the increase in tariffs. This is why tariff wars are so damaging. On the UK’s 77,000 products and services, No-Deal Brexit will cancel all current agreements. They will take 10 to 20 years to renegotiate – meantime it’s WTO rules. As a solo, relatively small power, the UK is likely to be the loser in such arguments. UK industries are afraid of all the usual threats – dumping, supply-interruptions, poisons, etc. that we have settled over the past 60 years. Bloomberg say:

Brexit negotiations are hanging by a thread. A no-deal outcome would be a major blow to the U.K.’s trading relationship with Europe, according to Bloomberg Economics. A less severe Brexit is possible, with the U.K. staying in the single market. At a minimum, there will be a period of uncertainty as talks come to a head. In total, about 0.9 percent of global GDP is exposed to Brexit trade risk. No surprise: the U.K. is the most vulnerable major economy, with 10 percent of GDP at risk. Ireland isn’t far behind, at 9.7 percent. For the euro area as a whole, 2.7 percent of GDP is exposed.

So, the UK’s risk is immense (10% of our GDP = 5M to 7.8M jobs or equivalent wages). The EU’s risk is 2.7%. The world, incl. the USA will suffer 0.9% GDP decline. My guess is that the world will rapidly and happily fill-in our lost exports with their own trade. So, we will not recover the 10% of GDP. The EU will replace our 62M population with new members and will recover their 2.7% loss of GDP – not least by grabbing our City-of-London business.

Other than this suicidal tariff war – Europe is as sound and solid as the other major blocs. Don’t short the Euro.

“We survived the Blitz – and Dunkirk - and The Falklands”  - “Into the Valley of Death rode the 600. …Ours is but to do AND die” (not as misquoted by lazy, fornicating Boris – “…to do OR die.”  If we DO Brexit, we will DIE.

ALL the latest Opinion  Polls show Remainers are in the majority. Why aren't they reported in the UK media?  Possibly because all media barons and VIPs are making fortunes out of Brexit. e.g. How much has Rees-Mogg made by betting against Sterling? The People, the many not the few, are already losing £900 a year each - and their jobs, from 5 million to 7.8 million jobs, are at risk.

"The Mother of Parliaments shut down by The Father of Lies."

Aidan O'Neill QC - 18th Sept 2019

Mel Cooper, Oxford, 3 Oct 2019 -  writes:

The problem is that the Leave Campaign was run by Dominic Cummings based on his understanding of the Fascist Propaganda Handbook. He loves it because he is, at heart, a Disrupter, and his rule book says quite clearly that all you need do is find a strong, emotive slogan, preferably one that is as simplistic a lie as possible, and that appeals to the basest fears and bigotry of a simple plurality.  The fearful and angry do not wish to think; they prefer to be blinkered and they want a target or focus for their anger and misery. So unify them and get them to give you the votes you need. They will outvote the splintered liberal parties and groups every single time!

The overarching slogan that Dominic “Josef Goebbels” Cummings came up with was: Take Back Control.

His promise? We will take back control of our sovereignty, our money, our borders and our laws. Keep repeating this as a mantra. This implies and even assumes that we have not got control over those things and no one, not one witty, intelligent person on the Remain side challenged this nonsense directly. The liberal papers and the BBC never said to Nigel Forage, who will have his 33rd appearance on BBC Question Time on 4th Oct (why? who invites and pays him?), “but what you are saying is a lie and based on false premises”. Even now, no one points out that we are about to do what the EU wants least, which is to withdraw from the EU without even having a withdrawal deal. If we did not have our Sovereignty, then how would we be allowed to do that? Scotland and Ireland have not got their sovereignty, it would seem, because they do not want to leave the EU - and by large majorities. But they have no veto in our system that is supposedly the most democratic in the world and more democratic than the EU.

So, demonstrably, the UK as an entity did not give away or lose control of our Sovereignty, folks, we pooled it. Just the way the UK is supposedly made up of four pooled sovereignties — for the moment.

If you do not accept, approve of or understand about pooled Sovereignties, then I think you might as well wait until Scotland or Ireland or Wales wish to break away and be independent to figure it out. Meantime, the money we are going to get back control of that we send to the EU annually is, guess what, about 1.3% of our annual budget. Boy, have we lost control of our money! Imagine, the EU membership fee means that we only control around 98.7% of our annual budget! Or do we control the remaining 1.3% as well since we choose voluntarily to send our fee for membership to the EU?

Not only that, no one bothered either to challenge the Money Control False Premise nor did they ever point out that we are the third biggest contributor to the EU budget because we are the third largest economy in Europe after Germany and France. Instead of being angry about this, we should be aching to be the biggest contributor because that would mean we are the richest economy in the EU! But that would require us to be doing a bit of analysis, a little bit of thinking, and that is out of the question. Need I go on?

Of course, it did not help that Jeremy Corbyn is a Eurosceptic and was a lazy, intolerant, irritable and largely absent figurehead for running the Remain Campaign for the Labour Party. He single-handedly, prematurely enabled Article 50. He has also become the darling of the Momentum cult.

And, by the way, the most important historic precedent for forming a Party of National Unity to run the government in a time of crisis is not that the leader of the Opposition has to be the leader of such a government; especially when that leader has the leadership skills of an intellectually narrow-minded, blinkered and tribal slug. In the days everyone likes to hark back to, i.e. the days of World War II, a certain Labour leader named Clement Attlee supported the leadership of a government of unity by Winston Churchill and was a committed supporter and Deputy Leader of that Prime Minister.

So maybe we should look for a solid, experienced leader like Ken Clarke or some other figurehead that everyone can get behind and actually trust.

Whatever you think of Jeremy Corbyn, it is very clear that a lot of people distrust him. So we need to factor that into the plans. We need someone demonstrably honourable, whom everyone trusts and who is more interested in the good of the nation that the good of his or her party or his or her power. That is what unity would mean. Even the supporters of Jeremy Corbyn, even the acolytes who sincerely believe that he has an almost divine integrity, must recognise that theirs is not a universal reaction to the man; and that it would be a good idea to back off insisting he has to lead the government of unity. If they do not, then a government of unified opposition MPs will simply not happen and we will crash out of the EU on Hallowe’en, 2019. That is what I predict at the moment, because Momentum and Corbyn simply do not seem capable of putting the good of the nation and national unity ahead of what a lot of people fear is just a cynical power grab.

They tell me it is the Will of the People to leave the EU because that is what the people narrowly voted for in 2016. Of course, another way of looking at this is to suggest that 37% of the people who were eligible to vote, voted to leave and that means that 63% did not — the 63% being made up of those who actively and consciously voted Remain and those who did not choose to vote because it was raining. The 63% were totally convinced Remain had to win so there was no urgency (were they targeted on Facebook by some tricky Cummings algorithms do you think?), they were feeling lazy or they were just plain irresponsible. But you ask me to respect this vote? Yet this vote is the result of what was clearly a propaganda campaign misinforming the people so that enough gullible, angry folk who hated David Cameron because of his loony, economically illiterate and damaging austerity obsession, would not support him in anything, even if it meant not thinking about what further damage they might be doing to themselves in this instance.

So there we are. The Will of the People is to make Jacob Rees-Mogg, Boris Johnson and their cohorts even richer and hand over to them the power to evade or change EU laws that benefit working people, and also to sell off the NHS to the USA with crocodile tears in their eyes because what else will we be able to do.

We voted for the easiest trade deals ever. We voted to be gods. We voted to rule the seas again. We voted never, ever, never, ever to be slaves. We voted to Take Back Control — well, for the Eurosceptic Conservatives to have control anyway. And we never talked about the moral issue of betraying the central dream of Europe that helped create the EU by little steps over the past decades: to create a forum for talk and diplomacy that would obviate the necessity for extreme competition and even war. We also voted to create a large trading block that would help each of the countries in the union punch above its individual weight in an increasingly global world. We never talked about the betrayal that leaving the EU would mean for the Good Friday Agreement based so heavily on the alignments between the UK and Eire because both were in the EU. We voted for bombs in Birmingham again, I fear. It was the EU that was part of the reason we could calm the Irish problem. It was the EU that gave us 45 years of peace and prosperity such as we had not really known before. We have voted to dismantle that prosperity, most probably; and possibly that peace too.

As for the myth that we have lost control of our borders, at the moment the EU entrants have fallen dramatically and so we have to take far more people from places like India, Pakistan and the Philippines to do the work. We still need those people, so the overall immigration to the UK has not fallen by all that much. But the people coming are not EU therefore they have to get through the nets created by Theresa May’s Hostile Environment. Even before the EU immigration fell, it amounted to no more than 20% of entrants into the country. That means that even before the Referendum we were not being overwhelmed by European people with a free pass to come. 80% of the people who came were non-EU and had to have visas and permission. We had overall control. And whatever happened to the millions of Turks poised to come here and destroy our culture and rape people? Who said that was about to happen? And by leaving the EU, we also, of course, sacrifice our reciprocal rights to travel, study, work and live in Europe with ease. But hell, isn’t that all worth giving up – for our “freedom to starve” in glorious independence and sovereignty?

As for our laws, I note that Priti Patel wants to reintroduce the death penalty. And I bet that many Leavers will applaud that, so let us go ahead and do it. We voted for that too. We also voted for the pound to be 23% less valuable today than it was before the Referendum and for the knock on effects of that to close down businesses but up tourism from countries with stronger currencies. Well, that’s good business, I suppose.

We also have to leave the EU so that we can redo one at a time the 170 or so trade deals (on 77,000 products) that we now have through our membership of the EU club, one at a time, individually, from the position of being a market of about 60 million instead of 550 million. Guess who will have the upper hand as we redo each of these negotiations with some of the strong economies of this world? Chlorinated Coronation Chicken! Yum yum! I can hardly wait! And American medical insurance is waiting in the wings to charge us double or treble the price for health-services.

So Good Luck, Brexiteers! We also have to leave the EU because David Cameron didn’t bother to take any time to explain the positives of the EU. He tripped off the Referendum prematurely (he could have done it 3 or 4 years later after some proper debates), with no real preparation, and with no thought of countering 40 years of anti-EU propaganda from the Right Wing Press of the UK. He ran a totally negative campaign about the damage leaving would do; he appealed to thought and intellect; and there was no leadership debate to inspire confidence in our membership of the EU.

My own fear is that the Conservative government of Boris Johnson really wants to gain authoritarian control so that they never have to worry about EU laws making them bring their offshore money back so that it can be fairly taxed. They also want to exploit situations that EU laws now prevent, laws we often introduced, asked for and even wrote. And hey, did you know that we have a veto in the EU system? How’s that for being able to exercise some sovereignty?

Sadly, I am beginning to think that the only thing we can do now is stop complaining that it was all a truly appalling con job - because the media will not listen to the 63%, any more than the anti-Dreyfuards would respond to logic or evidence - or any more than the McCarthyites in the USA in the 1950s could be convinced that the Reds were not hiding under all our beds. But I do have to keep on protesting because my conscience tells me to; and like Lillian Hellman before me, I find that I cannot cut my conscience to fit this year’s fashion.

The real witch hunt and the real betrayals are all on the Leave side. As in the actual play by Ibsen, these are the ones who are "the enemies of the people". But I guess we have to go through with it just so that the poor, benighted believers in the Cult of Brexit are finally disabused and have their eyes opened. Of course, they will blame it all on the EU for a while because it could not possibly be Boris Johnson’s fault, despite the £350 million per week bus that everyone knows was one of the more obvious propaganda lies. No, let us go ahead. Do not listen to your experts. Do not listen to all the nations of the world wondering what has happened to the British. And do not listen to your young people who, by and large, might want a more open society and future!

Or perhaps we should have another vote just to check again? In case there has been a change of mind and heart?

Or maybe not …   Mel Cooper, Oxford, UK 3 Oct 2019
